Converting a clamp on derailleur to braze on

there's no difference between clamp-on and braze-on versions of shimano front deraillers, you simply have to disassemble the band.

Nah thats incorrect--- that's why they sell the 2 different types. They are defenitely different---my question is can a clamp on be made to work as a braze on despite the fact that mounting bolts are absent

i just checked up on the shimano website and noticed that there are two models of Dura-Ace FD, one of them is the clamp-only model (FD-7700-B), i guess that's what you have, the other one, FD-7700-C, is the brazed-on model that eventually comes with the separated clamp adapter.. i don't think there's such difference on cheaper grouppos, for example ultegra FD comes brazed-on only (plus the optional clamp adapter), i thought it was the same for Dura-Ace, so that's why i've mistaken.

Whatever, I got a look at the exploded view for FD-7700-B, looks like part of the derailleur mechanics is one piece with the clamp, i don't think there's much you can do to make it work as brazed-on.

You need to look harder.Ultegra, 105, and tiagra are available in 11/8 and 11/4" clamp type.

you need to read better, what i say is that ultegra, 105 and tiagra clamp type FDs are simply brazed-on type FDs supplied with a separated clamp of the chosen diameter, while the clamp of Dura-Ace FD-7700-B is one piece with the derailleur.

No problem here bub. I'm looking at my 2003 shaimano parts book and 2002 QBP catalogue, and know the diference between band and braze on.the 13/8" is the one that uses a braze on and an adapter clamp in all applications. Band or clamp (not a braze o with an adapter) types are available in 11/8 and 11/4", but many places don't stock particularly the 11/4" just to make inventory easier. I've actully got some of them.

So the answer to the original question is no? Dura Ace clamp can't be made to work as a braze on
Im pretty sure thats the case but wanted to check if there was a ingenious conversion out there.

i know it's probably a little late for this answer, but i just went through the same thing on my bike. i have a braze on fitting on my frame. i just bought a dura-ace front derailleur (used). it said 7700 on it. it came with a clamp attached to it. i just took off the clamp, found a shorter screw, and attached it to the braze on fitting. fits perfectly. i guess there might be different models some which are easily adaptable and others which aren't.

And what you got was a braze on FD mounted on a separate adapter clamp. Some day maybe the pud heads will come to understand the difference between a braze on and a true band type. Many if not all currrent campy allow switching of the bands to different diameters on band types,and a band type can even be converted to a braze on. That however is not the case with other brands.
