    A few months ago I wrote in to ask for a cycle route to be maintained on the existing line of
    the A3. The National Trust want it dug up; many locals want it kept as a road for when the
    tunnel is blocked.

    My understanding is that the alternative oproposed for cyclists is:
    - much more steeply graded
    - not suitable for road bikes though I haven't looked at it personally.

    I now have a letter asking if I want to appear at the public enquiry, which starts in June, and how
    long I will need if so. I probably could attend, but only if cyclists' interests are not otherwise
    adequately represented. If I do, I will have to take time to survey the proposed route.

    So, is anyone else planning to go, and would there be any value in me attending too?

    I'm not local so can't answer the first part, but having been to a road public enquiry I would
    suggest you get involved if you can. It is a handy learning experience, you'll see various parties
    trying to balance pyramids on their points on the day and be variously shocked at the bare faced
    cheek of the authorities. But also you'll come across people who are basically on the same side of
    the fence as you but 'never thought of it like that'. These may be allies for the future.

    OK, I'm good at writing reports, making a case, stuffing one up the snotty barristers and speaking
    and asking relevant questions when cross examining witnesses - But one reason for this is that I've
    done it - And next time I'll be better.

    This is one of the few occasions where you can get the authorities to put their cards on the table
    which may be handy later.

    I went thinking I'd be bored stiff, but actually there was a lot to pay attention to.
