I like my Ritchey Z-max. Good all-round hardpack/loose stuff tire for San Diego/SoCal.

Their knobs are too squishy for good hardpack performance.

I really like IRC Mythos. They're usually available from Performance for about $15.

I agree about the Z-Max' squishy knobs.

I've had great luck with the Bontrager Revolt SS/ST in southern CA. However, many people find the Michelin semi-slicks more forgiving in the corners,
especially in those surprise patches of sand and pea gravel. This is because the Michelin has a squarer profile, with the side knobs biting in
earlier, preventing washouts in the loose stuff. So the Michelins are really good. The tradeoff is that they're not quite as fast as the Bontragers,
especially on pavement (if you have a substantial road ride to the trailhead).

Over the years, I've gotten more satisfaction from tires that roll easily up long, slow, 3000' climbs, than ones good for kamikaze descents but which
sap power from every pedal stroke.

Depends on his definition of XC. WTB 2.4 Motoraptors suit me just fine. For
not so large tires Sorni's suggestion of Mythos XCs is good. His suggestion
of Fire XC Pros isn't as good as the knobs have torn off quickly on the two

I use both the Revolt and the Michelin Sprint. Both are good IMHO for hardpack
although I find after a few hundred km's the rear Revolt seems to spin a little
too easily on steep climbs. I accept this trade-off compared to more serious off-
road tires because I end up on pavement from time to time on this bike. I like
the rounded profile more because they break away in a more forgiving manner. The
square shoulder tire digs in more, but I find it's all or nothing when starting
to slide. I prefer the feedback, perhaps at the expense of corner speed.

I do XC races with IRC Mythos XC Slick 1,95 and those are
really cool. Fast rolling and much better control than most
similar tires.

Good God! As an only partly rehabilitated motorcyclist, it
never occurred to me that the smaller knobs on bicycle tires
might simply tear off--please tell me that this happens only
to the side knobs or on bad tires or something else
reassuring.

It's happened to me on 3 models of tires. The aforementioned
Ritchey Z-Max, I would have mentioned this in my previous
message but this was quite some time ago and they may have
changed the compound. I believe it was because the knob
doesn't have enough material at the base and they're fairly
tall. Side knobs in this case.

Then, the Geax Sedona of about 4 years ago. I believe for
the same reason as above. Any knob in this case.

And currently, on my bike at the moment, a Panaracer Fire XC
Pro. The knobs have plenty of material at the base so maybe
it's a less elastic compound? And any knob in this case.
