  1. Well, that's it, I've been and gone and done it, I've bought
meself a veritable brick with the styling of a caravan site!

I've swapped <cough> my superb Sony V1, with its elegant
looks, superb results and wonderful size and weight for a
Canon G5 which has the aesthetic appeal of a fire brick and
the weight to match!! ;-) Hmm, it was a move I chose to make
but as the saying goes "Must Grrrumble!!"

Admittedly the Can[n]on has the better spec, I hate to say
this because of the prentions it suggests, for the "more
serious" photographer; I went for it because of the filter
    option(s) and this RAW thingummy.

    And there's the rub!!

Now I've got RAW... what do I do with it?? I mean Photoshop
has a nice new window thing to twiddle about with "things"
but I'm supposed to be past the "twiddley" stage, no? :-)
How best can I maximise the advantages that RAW gives me in
terms of maintaining the integrity (ie minimising
degradation) ot t'ut' original image? Anything else I should
be aware of / practices I should adopt?

    and, and what do I use to look at the files on the camera;
using the Sony was eeee-asy; the file browser recognised the
Sony's memory as another "drive". With this Can[n]on I have
no such luxury ;-) Sure there's a file manager thingy
bundled with it, but I need yet another piece of software
like an ole in the head; is there a way around this browsing
situation... or a beter piece of software to do it with?

As my topic title says, sorry this post is OT.. and it might
well be WG ;-) but at least I didn't mention Wales !!!
    <doh!> that's torn it!! /me ducks and runs ;-)

Can't believe you swapped, you're almost in tears here! ;-)

    | Admittedly the Can[n]on has the better spec, I hate to say
    | this because of the prentions it suggests, for the "more
    | serious" photographer; I went for it because of the filter
    | option(s) and this RAW thingummy.

I've got a Cokin filter holder, and use A series Cokin
filters. To be honest, whilst the ND filters can save many
shots, I can never be bothered to get them out my bag and
use them! :-) ...not for snaps anyway! ;-) ;-) ;-)

    | And there's the rub!!
    |
    | Now I've got RAW... what do I do with it?? I mean
    | Photoshop has a nice new window thing to twiddle about
    | with "things" but I'm supposed to be past the "twiddley"
    | stage, no? :-) How best can I maximise the advantages that
    | RAW gives me in terms of maintaining the integrity (ie
    | minimising degradation) ot t'ut' original image? Anything
    | else I should be aware of / practices I should adopt?

For the Canon G5 (which is what I've got), you can save the
file as a 16bit TIF file, which is the highest quality, with
no degraduation. Using the RAW file converter, you can also
adjust the white balance, the sharpening, the colour
saturation, and the contrast. Personally, I just tend to
convert them as a 16 bit TIF file, adjust the white balance
to what looks best in the preview window, then leave the
    other settings alone.

    | and, and what do I use to look at the files on the camera;
    | using the Sony was eeee-asy; the file browser recognised
    | the Sony's memory as another "drive". With this Can[n]on I
    | have no such luxury ;-) Sure there's a file manager thingy
    | bundled with it, but I need yet another piece of software
    | like an ole in the head; is there a way around this
    | browsing situation... or a beter piece of software to do
    | it with?

I don't actually use the Canon File Viewer to convert or
view my images. I thought it worked too slow, and the
previews were too slow. After reading through Luminious
Landscapes, I noticed that BreezeBrowser got a good review,
with Michael Reichmann saying that "if you are a Canon
digital SLR owner this is the program for viewing and
    converting your files:": luminous-luminous-
    landscape.com/reviews/breezebrowser.shtml

Anyway, you can download the full version from here:
    breezesys.comindex.htm It's a full
working version, except you are limited to reviewing a
certain number of images. But if you download and install
it, go to the Help menu, click Register, and then enter your
registration details (email me! ;-) ), you can use it as a
    full version with no limits.

For generally viewing files, I use IrfanView, which is also
    a free program: irfanview.comirfanview.com There's a plugin
that's either included or available from the website (sorry,
i can't remember), and it lets you view Canon RAW files
using this. You can adjust the file viewing options so you
can see a quick preview of the image extremtly quickly, or
you can see a full resolution preview if you don't mind
waiting for 10 seconds (on my slow computer anyway).

Compared to using JPEG's, this is all a pain in the [censored], I
must admit, and I took my first 4,500 images as JPEG's! But
I wish I hadn't know, as when you want to go back to an
image and adjust it, it's nice to have the best possible
quality version of that image to work with, as well as being
able to adjust things with the RAW file when converting.

    | As my topic title says, sorry this post is OT.. and it
    | might well be WG ;-) but at least I didn't mention Wales
    | !!! <doh!> that's torn it!! /me ducks and runs ;-)

Nahh, there's more photography talked about than walking in
this group! ;-) But I guess that it's kept on-topic because
it doesn't matter whether people walk to take photos, or
walk and take photos, it's all part of the same subject.
    (IMVHO) :-)

Aye, I pondered even before if I was doing the right thing,
so to speak, the Sony is a superb camera in a lot of ways. I
made the move for "technical reasons" (fnarr!) because the

Okay, I thought your problem was converting the files that
were already on your computer? But it sounds as though your
problem starts when you've got a camera with all your
images on, connect it to the USB cable, then want to
transfer them onto your PC? I actually use the Canon
software to do this, I think it's called Zoom Browser or
something. Just connect your camera, load the program,
choose the Camera or Memory Card option, then select the
images you want to download. Easy! ;-)

Yes, that's pretty much it! ;-) Of course, when you convert
to 16bit TIF, you can adjust the white balance, sharpness,
saturation, and contrast, etc. I was experimenting with this
yesterday, and I was actually getting good results from
using the High Sharpness, then using Neat Image to clean up
the extra noise. By the way, Neat Image is excellent, and
Genuine Fractals is good for making images bigger etc. ;-)

    Quoted message said:

Do you actually save the RAW or does the TIFF format
    preserve everything you want preserving?

The RAW file is the digital negative, if you like. It will
always stay there as a *.crw file, unless you delete it.
When you process your RAW images, it creates a seperate file
of your choice, either a JPEG or a TIF file or whatever.
This file is definitely separate from the original RAW, so
that's the good thing - you can always go back to the
    original 'negative' and start again.

A very moderate opinion compared to mine. My solution is to
fine every owner of a 4wd the equivalent of 5 years salary,
forcing them to wear a T-shirt that says "What the HELL was
I thinking?? I could just get off my ASS and WALK!!!!!" for
the rest of their life, and crushing the "vehicles" into

    Hi Guy,

Sorry, that's not me I'm afraid. When I first read it, I
thought you were giving me a grid reference or something, as
I didn't have a clue what you were on about!

But I typed those two codes into Yahoo, and they've brought

    in England rather than America.

Interestingly though, that other Ste lists the band Joy
Division as one of his interests! That's my favourite band
ever! So it's a coincidence, as normally, nobody I know has
even heard of them, never mind like them! It's a small
    world... :-)

    Take care,

Okay, I thought your problem was converting the files that
    were already on your computer?

That was the gist of the original reason for posting... in
    anticpation of just this situation

But it sounds as though your problem starts when you've got
a camera with all your images on, connect it to the USB
cable, then want to transfer them onto your PC?

Aye, I fell before the first hurdle <doh!>

For generally viewing files, I use IrfanView,

I've not tried Irfan, if it makes getting the photies
from the camera and roughly organising them a simple
operation (before doing anything else) then I might look
    further

No, I use IrfanView to actually view the files that have
already been uploaded to my PC. ;-)

Ah, just as you said, above; the sneaky approach!! but but
but that's wot Breezy does, no?

By the way, Neat Image is excellent, and Genuine Fractals

Neat Image? Genuine Fractals? Never come across these; you

Do you actually save the RAW or does the TIFF format
    preserve everything you want preserving?

The RAW file is the digital negative, if you like.

Ah, thanks for that, makey sense now. (I'm sure I knew that
anyway, but had filed that snippet away somewhere)

Is there such a thing as a "hands free" card reader whereby,

    | Ah, just as you said, above; the sneaky approach!! but but
    | but that's wot Breezy does, no?

I use BreezeBrowser to load and convert the RAW files, but I
use IrfanView to view full-screen versions of the images
(RAW previews or Jpegs), and I can scroll through a folder
of images this way, one image at a time. If you use Windows
XP, then I use IrfanView in the same was as Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer - which, by the way, is an excellent piece of
software, and it's disappointing that you can't use this
    with Windows 2000... :-(

    | Neat Image? Genuine Fractals? Never come across these; you

Well you mustn't read Paul Saunder's posts often! ;-) (a
Google search for Neat Image in this group is recommended)
Neat Image gets rid of noise, and does an excellent job of
it too. If you ever read on dpreview how the G5 has more
noise than some other cameras, then if you think it's a
problem (and it shouldn't be if you use ISO50), then use
Neat Image to clean it up.

Genuine Fractals is great for interpolating images, like if
you wanted to print a G5 image at A3 and 300dpi, for
example. It does a better job of enlarging than the standard
    Photoshop resizing.
