    Ah but I did - that's how avoided him & I didn't hit him 🙂

If you saw him before you set off, then your even more culpable, as the only two ways he could
have been going was left or straight on! Sorry.
    :-(

You seem to be going out of your way to be acrimonious despite your professed unwillingness to be
    drawn into an argument.

Actually I thought I was going out of my way yo be very quietly mild,we could have got down
to "Listen you moron, ans try to learn a bit 'cos I'm a master of everything in the world"
    level by now.

Very true, but so can people who make the intitial complaint.

What if she didn't see him before she set off as he was hidden behind other vehicles and masked by
headlights then after Helen checked her mirrors and proceeded to move off he caught up with her
and only by luck or good observation Helen saw him and reacted accordingly?

But he wasn't, Helen said she saw him before she set off.

As I said I didn't want a nasty argument so I'm bowing out after this one.

After all scanning the road and mirrors leaves short time periods where one or t'other is
    unscanned.

I think the point stands that he was riding down the inside of left signalling traffic at night
with inadequate lighting/visibility aids and placing himself in jeopardy, maybe he thinks he's a
superior cyclist and can deal with situations or maybe he doesn't think much at all.

    Agreed.

A cyclist wearing dark colours, with no lights, no reflectives, cycling *at night* up the inside
of a line of traffic all ready to turn left is doing a pretty stupid thing, as well as being
inconsiderate to other road users, be they other cyclists, motorists or pedestrians.

    agreed.

    Quoted message said:

Just suppose he'd been at my blind spot?

No such thing, or your mirrors aren't adjusted correctly.

Sorry Marc, but when we cycle we should adhere to the rules too - it helps reduce the risks to
    ourselves and to others.

vehicles turning in front of ) you, out of or into the side road. Do not ride on the inside of

Out of interest, how does that relate to cycle lanes leading up to junctions where there is a long
queue of traffic? Must you vacate the cycle lane altogether and queue with the traffic? What I sort
of mean is, if cars are slowly putting their indicators on one by one as they approach a junction,
then must a cyclist always stay behind the last one in the queue to be indicating?

The law feels (to me) to be pre-proliferation of dedicated on-road cycle paths. I know at least
three places on my way to work where it would be almost impossible to not ride on the inside of
vehicles, because that's where the council has funneled me.

Not that I don't think it's a good idea to be very, very observant and adhere to the first sentence
of the rule: I add that hastily, before I add instead to the rumbles of thundery acrimony on the
horizon of this thread...! You showed grace under fire and most drivers wouldn't have checked as
    thoroughly as you.

The Highway Code doesn't really help, you need Cyclecraft published by The Stationary Office. If the
traffic is stopped it advises, in the absence of an advanced stop line, that you position youself
behind the first car in the queue but where the driver of the second car can clearly see you. If the
traffic is moving you can move with it. There is plenty of sound advice and cautionary advice on the
subject in the book that I won't repeat here.

Just accept it as part of the group's folklore (with the associated Paving Slab Fairy).

Either don't worry (references are becoming less common) or Google.

<http://homepage.ntlworld.com/c.butty/bibshort.htm> It's that dangerous combination of bibshorts and
Norfolk women you have to be really careful of.

    Aww James... moi... scary???

Maybe not - apart from the slabs. Then again, I have no bib shorts so am probably quite safe. Of
course, one cannot completely trust Norfolk slab-hurling gals from any county.

So *that's* what bibshorts are! All this time I've been living in terror that one of my innocent
items of clothing would make me a target for Helen Bint Laden... there again, given the state of my
underwear and my fantasies about generously-built ladies, it might have been a Merciful Release.

I won't tell you what innocent frilly item of clothing I was really worried about. Not unless you
let me... ok, ok, I'll keep the details to myself. You may be relieved to know that none of them
involve Guy Chapman's legs. This is a family newsgroup, right? What news of the urclings anyway?
