  1. wanted, interesting walk of 5-6 miles, possibly more, on
    'made' paths

Me, i'll walk anywhere, but the love of my life, who wants
to go walking tomorrow, doesn't like -

steep uphill or downhill mud tussocky grass farmyards
    (too much poo)

    any interesting suggestions other than
    (a) trade her in
    (b) indoor walking (why not ? you can do indoor
    windsurfing !)

I'd suggest doing Loughrigg Terrace in the Lakes from
Rydal. Easy walking on obvious paths, and one of the
most beautiful walks in the District. (I'd take the
love of my life on this walk, if I had one!) But be
warned: it will be busy on a Saturday!

Try the walk from Rydal to Grasmere along the Loughrigg
Terrace returning by Dove Cottage and the old Corpse
Road........should fit the bill perfectly. Dave All
    Wainwrights completed 74 Walks......763 miles......approx
200,000' of ascent to complete. At Heysham looking across
Morecambe Bay to the Cumbrian Fells

How about a bimble along a canal towpath? You can't
guarantee the complete absence of [censored], not after last
night's rain, but you stand as good a chance there as
anywhere. And if you choose the right spot you can always
stop for lunch in a pub.

The only disadvantage is that unless you choose your spot
carefully, you'll be returning the same way. However, if you
walk along the Bridgewater canal, which has no locks, you'll
keep ascent and descent to an absolute minimum - just to
show that you've been listening, thereby earning yourself a
    few brownie points!

Very short walk that looks like a hill but doesn't feel like
one: Mam Tor and some of the ridge from the Mam Nick car
park. You can miss out the climb to Mam Tor on the return
journey by forking right before the final climb and
contouring round (I think these paths are all well-
    maintained).

Better and longer but still with no long uphill pulls is the
circuit from Castleton, via Cave Dale, to Mam Tor and along
the Great Ridge to Lose Hill. I seem to recall, from some
years ago, that the tracks back to Castleton from Lose Hill
can get muddy, so it may be best to head early for the
Castleton - Hope road. There is a route from Hope to
Castleton along field paths south of the road, but I can
give no guarantees of its dryness at the moment. Perhaps
someone else can confirm that there are no seriously muddy
    bits in Cave Dale.

  7. Thanks for the suggestions, peeps.

on the day, we went up to Grizedale and did two 3 1/2 mile
circular walks from the visitor centre. going round in a
figure of 8, and having lunch back at the visitor centre -
    good day all round

When I first read the title of this thread I thought it said
'new england'. I was about to suggest a nice ramble through
the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts or the famous
Appalachian Trail through Tyringham Valley... then I noticed
the suggestion for Loughrigg Terrace and realised my error
in time. I could have looked quite silly...

Did parts of it in 1998 and had a good time. Climbed Mount
Greylock (highest in Massachusetts) and slept in a 3-sided
shelter miles from anywhere, walked alongside the Housatonic
River from Kent in Connecticut and camped in a little
clearing where all I could hear was insects buzzing and
cheeping all night long. Lots of remains of deserted houses
by a disused road, now the Trail path itself. When I get a
website together (one year soon!) I'll put up the pics I
    took. Lovely walking :-)
