Oh....to whoever said some nonsense about a 15 mile pedal churning, I assure you that none of my rides consist of this. You must be one of the cheesedicks I'm talking about who has more money than balls. I'm doing a race in three hours. I don't expect any of those people I pass everyday to be there. Do you race?
Once again....I must say that that is a killer bike. If I had that Playmate, I'd give her to you just for a chance to sit on it....heh

I guess that I can't rebut by saying that I'm not a "cheesedick" because I don't really know what that means. Yes I do race by the way, but only offroad. I have no idea why you think I have more money than balls... Perhaps one needs to log long, hard miles on a fully tricked-out Fuji Finest in order to have "balls" in your opinion. I don't know. Anyway, good luck racing that Fuji. Rest assured, I'll be enjoying my ride just as much. Anyway, you better hydrate and rest for that big race. Thanks for letting us all know about it by the way. I (for one) am very proud of you.

Wasn't as much as you might think. I transferred all components from my previous ride, which saves quite a bit of coin. The frame is $2700, so you can make it MUCH more, or NOT much more by the components. Your call dude, start saving - they're GREAT bikes.
I just had my SEVEN interview today, Fred said I was more than worthy to ride one of thier bikes (I'm so lucky). Its just amazing how much detail they put into to fitting you and designing the bike around your request. I currently have Bianchi XL Boron Steel w/ Campy Record. I wanted the bottom braket to be more stiff on the SEVEN. Fred knew just what I wanted and could compare the flex in my Bianchi on their rating scale and relate it to the SEVEN. The tubes will be selected to increase stiffness in the Bottom Bracket but not make the ride harsh. Exceleration should improve as well. I also thought about transfering componets to keep the cost down, but I will be building new with the exception of wheels. Still the total cost won't be so bad. Just need to try and be patient for a few more weeks.
This seems to divide between the old guys who can afford the buck$ and the younger ones.
I'm 54 and riding for only one year. My first bike, purchased from a very reptable Bay Area shop, gave me a backache. I kept moving the seat back and got a longer stem, but the bike still felt too short (top tube). Two pro shops, one using an old experienced guy who eyeballed me on a trainer and the other using both Serotta and SEVEN fitting system, came up with a 52 seat / 56 top tube geometry. Clearly not stock size; clearly the <10% of folks who can't be accomodated with a stock frame. So I ordered a SEVEN Alta and feel fortunate that I can afford the price.
Will 25 year olds on $200 bikes pass me on hills? I imagine so. Is it OK that I went for the custom bike? I think so as well.
My solution to bike envy. Don't talk about the bike (other than to old folks like me) and get the frame painted WITHOUT any SEVEN stickers on it! But, I plan to enjoy riding it!!
First I haven't ridden a Seven so I can't offer any help in that department.
Second, to aspollock, I don't know I agree with your decision to conceal the nature of your frame. The reason they put stickers on there is advertising, it seems that they are putting a lot of work in to each of these frames and letting them showcase their product is part of the bargain.
Last, I'm one of those lucky ones with the legs to power almost anything. But I respect the people with the super nice bikes who get out there and ride, even if you want to hit potholes. If you let your bike sit in the garage then sell it to me. The last race I was in my bike dropped a chain, no it wasn't crossed over or misadjusted. I was time trialing to close back up to the peloton and passed a fellow on a $5k bike, he was dropped but had a huge smile on his face ( at the time I was wearing a grimace of pain) but we were both having a great time, and at least to me that's what it's about.

Concerning advertising, one of the things I like about a custom bike is that you can have it painted anyway you want. Our local builder, SANO, asks if it's ok to put his name on the bike. If you don't want to see SANO on the bike, it won't be there anywhere.
Agree cycling is about the athlete, not the bike. Us old guys may be able to afford a nice frame, but nobody can buy the motor..... that we have to earn. I may envy a guy that can smoke by me on a tough climb, but it's not because of what equipment he's on.
