  1. I have started to get urinary tract infection from time to
time. This has been occuring once every week or so. Some
weeks it just did not appear. When it does appear, I get a
burning sensation on the tip and want to pass water. I have
to keep rushing to the toilet to pass water but only a few
    drops arrive.

I have tracked it down to one common thing - when I eat
oranges, clementines, satusamas or mangoes, the very next
day I am suffering with the problem. When I don't eat any of
these citrus fruits I am ok.

Weird. Whats happening here? Am I carrying an infection
which flares up with excess sugar intake? Or are my kidneys
not coping with the citrus fruits?

[I already suffer from Gout and mild nephritis].

    Are you a diabetic?

Unless you took antibiotics to treat the infection, it's not
likely that you have an infection which just pops up once in
a while. However, just before I was diagnosed with diabetes,
I too occasionally noticed a burning sensation when
urinating. I don't know exactly why this happened, but it
might have been due to irritants in the urine causing the
pain - maybe just the acidity or maybe ketones in the urine.
I really don't know, but you should get checked for
infection first. The problem was exacerbated when urinating
after "vigorous exercise" of the penis - like

Nephritis is a complication of diabetes, so this should be
    looked into also. Good luck.

That certainly can happen with folks who have diabetes.

No idea why it appears to be citrus and mango specific.

If anything, one would think the acid in citrus would
    be helpful.

IIRC, citrus fruits counterintuitively cause alkaline
rather than acid urine. If you want to acidify your urine,
take lots of vitamin C - it goes right through you, and
    it's an acid.

I think it would be a very unusual person who gets an
excess sugar intake from eating a few citrus fruits,
considering how much sugar is added to almost every food
    most people eat.

Mangos contain compounds somewhat related to those in poison
ivy, and it's not unusual for people to find them
irritating, or even get dermatitis from peeling them. The
oils in citrus peels can be quite irritating to some. Maybe
the poster is sensitive or allergic to something in citrus
and/or mangos that is passed in the urine?

I have no medical qualifications, but I think it would be a
good idea for the poster to take his problem to a
physician. He can get his blood sugar checked and his urine
examined for infection. Chronic UTIs are no fun, and can
spread to the kidneys, so it's worth getting treated. If
there's no infection, and his blood sugar is normal, maybe
he should just avoid citrus and mangos. There's lots of
other fruits to eat. Being sure to drink enough water is a
    good idea, too.

  5. Because of Gout and Nephritis, I already drink a lot of
water (around 2 litres per day).

Only two days ago, I had some clementines (like
oranges/satumas) and I was in agony for 2 days. It has
    started to wear off today.

I do not get this problem if I eat other sweet stuff.
Sometimes, I eat excesses of candy and Asian sweets and do
not get the problem. So the problem has to be related to the
citrus fruit. Could it be something to do with a stomach
infection which is exaberated by the citrus fruits?

And, yes, sometimes having *** really increases the problem.

Ok, despite the fact that I love citrus fruits, I could cut
down or give up altogether. But there must be an explanation
for all this. I guess I will have to see my doctor soon.

  6. Progress report:

I have worked out that this has nothing to do with citrus
fruit. Its the excess intake of water. I drink mostly 2
litres of water each day (to keep the nephritis and Gout at
bay). This is what is producing the problem of burning etc.
During periods when I do not drink much water (weekends),
the problem tends to decrease. Last week, as a test, I cut
down the water intake to about 1/2 litre per day and by the
end of the week I was feeling really good and the problem
had disappeared. But when I resumed the high water intake,
the problem was back within 4-5 hrs.

I have seen my doctor who is organising some test for me. I
also had a sugar level test done by a chemist and that
    showed normal.
