Someone told me that 21 stands for 21 speeds. Does Seven
stand for the year it was built...1997? I am guessing, and
the only thing that I know of is that this was orginally
purchased about 10 years ago.

I bought a Miyata 712 (not 721) road bike new in 1989. It
may have been a 1988 model. It was 7-speed with double
chainring, so you'd think it would be a 714 if the model
number had the number of speeds.
The bike has 3 stickers on the chainstay that seem to
indicate it was a triathlon model. I don't know the
geometry, but it's more upright and has a much shorter top
tube than my more recently purchased bikes, though those are
admittedly more race-oriented.
The salesman told me at the time that Miyata was owned by
Trek, but I've never heard or read this anywhere else so I
doubt it. That bike shop is no longer in business ;-)
This was a fantastic bike. I used it with fenders for all-
weather commuting and put 12,000 miles on it. I'm in the
process of converting it to fixed gear (it has horizontal
dropouts, something you don't find in road bikes these
days), so it will live on.
