  1. Is there a better bike light than the NiteRider Flame
    Thrower?

Is there a better deal for the NiteRider Flame Thrower
Lighting System for approximately $379.99 including
    shipping?

    niterider.comFlameThrower.html

I am interested in both their handlebar and helmet
    mounting hardware.

  2. Depends. Why do you think you need such a powerful lighting
system? NR stuff is designed for extreme offroad
conditions. Not what we generally face on a recumbent. For
the same money, you could get ten of those 5-LED Cateyes
    and a ton of AAs.

I've got a NiteRider rig with high intensity discharge lamp
head. I never would have purchased it myself, it was a
trade. The HID replacement bulb is almost $100 (including
shipping, if you look hard you can find them in the $60
range). That is a very expensive lighting system, yessirree.
When I meet oncoming riders I have to cover the light with
my hand or they curse at me, it's so unbelievably intense.
You must never leave NR components on your bike when it's
parked. They will be gone when you return. Be sure to carry
at least one good backup light because when the NR battery
runs out the HID dies within about 10 minutes. And I had to
create a silly extension pipe mount to move the light head
out past the fairing on my TE.

Aside from those minor annoyances, I love it. But again, I'd
have never bought one for myself with my own money. I doubt
you can find a better deal but you could save 20% if you
were an REI member and still have your Spring Sale coupon.
That takes it down to about $310.00, almost reasonable!

I assume you mean that some NR stuff is meant for that. Some
of their stuff (including some products with "road" in the
name) is only "good enough" for on-road commuting, so
stepping up to other stuff that might be nominally intended
    for trail use is reasonable.

But that would weigh a ton :-), and where would you mount
those ten lights (which all combined still might not do as
good a job as a "to see" light in some road conditions).

Or he could get the CygoLite HID, which with 20% off is
$240, albeit with a NiCad battery.

  6. Actually, it's not a strange question, because many people
try to spam newsgroups subtly by posting questions exactly
as you have asked. It sounded me me like a very sincere
    question politely phrased.

If I ask if there is a better light then you think that I
    am spammer.

I don't follow your logic. Likewise this is not your first
time at sugar coating an attack on another's credibility
    without facts.

Previously, I had commented on a thread about safety shirts
for bikes to which you commented "It's a classic Spam
    methodology"

By your logic, since you have nothing on topic to contribute
then I should think that you are trolling.

This is a recumbent bike group where we share
information and ask questions without your prior
    approval --mostly on topic.

This is not the bloody Spanish Inquisition.

We can afford to let a few spammers in if it stops the
paranoid belief that every poster sells a product.

You seem more interested in police topics that bike topics
so use alt.fan.police to stay on topic.

Please talk about your bike and not . . . is he or isn't he
    a spammer.

And, I'll try not to feed the trolls, Melinda Meahan (if
that is who you really are).

    On Topic:

All I want is a 4+ hours, bright bike light --and the brand
    is not important!

Thanks for the good responses on hub based and less
    expensive brands.

It is interesting to note and compare my answer to Father
Time to Melinda's. She is ever the note of sweet reason and
forbearance. I fancy that I used to be like this myself in
another lifetime, but I have given it up as I have learned

will get you exactly nowhere in this life. It even seems to
engender contempt for the most part. So instead, I go for
the jugular like a mad beast because that is what life (and
Mr. Sherman) has taught me to do.

However, it is good to touch base every now and then with a
rational soul who knows how to think about things. Note at
the end of her message how she still wants to be helpful to
this jerk about the bike light. That would not ever even
occur to me to do such a thing! I always like to end my
messages with a bit of invective so there is no mistaking
how I feel about things. Truth to tell, I am mostly [censored] 100% of the time lately. I blame this sad state of
affairs wholly on Mr. Sherman, ever my nemesis and foe 'til
    death do us part.

  13. In a word - Yes - It's not pretty and requires changing
batteries everynight, but yes! therer is a better system!

I commute 14 miles, one way, week-days starting at 4 AM,
and I went through many variations before I discovered the
current system that works GREAT! It's always dark, winter
and summer on the way to work, and in the winter, it's
sometimes dark by the time that I head for home. I do a
lot of night riding! Part of my route is no paved or
    lighted, part is.

I use three Mag-Lites! powered with rechargeable
batteries. I always have a set of batteries charging at
home when I am at work, and a set of batteries charging at
work when I am at home.

The Mag-Lites that I use are the smaller version of the
three to five D-cell battery flashlights that you see a lot
of cops and truckers use. Milled from solid aluminum and
almost indistructalble. Cops that carry one of these do not
carry night sticks, truckers routinely use them as tire
    thumpers. They're tough!

They put ot a lot of light, I once had a car flash his
brights at me thinking I was on a hi/low beam system!
Three lights allow you to focus the beams where you
want/need them, for me that is two out and one down close.
    Works great!

Mounting can be a problem, as the mount must be stable and
yet quickly dismountable. I solved the problem by making a
block cut out of resin that matches the handlebar piece that
I have mounted on the front. The block mounts to the bar,
and the flashlight to the block, both held on by one wrap of
velcro. Works great, only the velcro has needed to be
replaced. Slight re-adjustment when mounting each morning is
easy! It's fast, they come off right away at work, and plop
    into my bag.

Cost? I don't know, as it has been too long, but the system
    consists of: Three, 2 cell, mag-lites; 24 C-cell batteries;
    2 chargers; velcro; resin blocks.

    Hope this helps.

What the hell do you mean my post was cut off? What kind of
a newsreader are you using? I am using my OE newsreader and
it works just fine. If you are using Google, it should all
be there on the page even if you have to go to the full page
to get it. Screw it! If you do not know how to use Google by
    now, then you never will.

By the way, I never rant. My posts are replete with wisdom
and truth and many other good things. I always cut to the
quick of an argument. You should hang on my every word and
at the end of it all you will be a wiser and far better man
than you have ever been heretofore.

There is NEVER any reason to top post. If you have a brain
in your head, you can figure out how to edit judiciously so
as to help the reader to make sense out of what is being
said. That is always my number one main concern - to make
sure that the reader knows what is going on. But when some
one top posts, it is almost impossible to accomplish this
    very simple and elementary task.

You have got that right Melinda. We men are only good for
one thing and that is killing one another. After a life time
of reflecting on the human condition I despair of there ever
being any such thing as progress. What needs to happen is
for the male gender to go out of existence and for the

place is to spread those genes around in order to insure
vigor and vitality. Nature made a huge mistake when it
could not figure out how to procreate by cell division
without all the problems of inbreeding. If nature could
have solved this problem by cell division, there would
    never have been any reason

Chris, any thread that goes on too long is going to get
sidetracked and/or go off the rails altogether. That of
course is what has happened to this thread. You must learn
to expect this sort of thing because we are all mature
adults here and we have minds that range broadly. One
thought leads to another and before you know it we are in
Timbuktu. You might as well get used to it. Only extremely
boring subject topics will stay on topic. That is not really
what we want here is it?
