Lively music to play while entertaining

Can your computer play a DVD-R? I can send you a copy of my
library. It's 3 DVD-R disks and contains over 8 days worth
of music! <G> About 13 gigs worth.

You can re-burn them onto CD's and there is a large
variety of music.

No charge except for the cost of the disks and postage. It's
illegal to sell copied music. ;-)

Food music, eh? So what does your taste run to? Last time I
had guests, we listened to Blossom Dearie, Dwight Yoakum,
Terry Allen, and Chuck E. Weiss. Eclectic, I know, but
there you have it. Tomorrow, when a friend comes over for
ribs, I'll begin with the Flatlanders and see where it goes
from there.

So sorry to hear about your house! I hope everyone was safe.

I'm not sure what you mean by "lively," but we got a CD at
Christmas that we really like to play when entertaining. The
group is Los Lonely Boys (their debut album is also called
Los Lonely Boys), from Austin, TX. A friend of ours gave us
the CD. Check out the reviews on Amazon. It's a really good
CD that is lively, yet works for background music. It's also
great for just plain listening when you're alone, too. I
believe that one of the Lonely Boys, Henry Garza, has a solo
album, but haven't been able to find it.

What else? Can't miss w/ Jimmy Buffett.

Another good one is Doug and the Slugs, a band from
Vancouver (I think...hmm, that could be wrong, but somewhere
in Canada). I have a CD that has their Cognac and Bologa and
Wrap It! albums on it. Not sure whether you can still buy
this CD anywhere, and I'm not even sure where I got it.
Lively and interesting.

A friend in another state told me that her last party last
Saturday featured retro-music from the 30s and 40s. She had
two CD players set up so that different parts of the house
had different songs/music.

A good time was had by all.

Depends on the time of year... Christmas is the time for
Gregorian Chants and Christmas carols.

I like to play Buena Vista Social Club or the Gypsy Kings --

I'll second this, these two albums are among my top
entertaining CDs. I've also got some Tito Puente CDs that
come out for this purpose.

Then again, most of the time I'm entertaining I'm also
making Cuban food, so the music matches the food, too.

This is kind of a pet peeve of mine. First, it is not
illegal to copy music. It is only illegal to copy music
without the artist's/authors permission. Most of us would
not think of walking into a Wal-Mart and walking out with a
product under out coat, but many people who would never so
something like that would not think twice about making a
copy of a CD and giving it away. In my mind there is really
no difference at all.

On the other hand, many up and coming musicians, as well as
some who are well established, are more than happy to allow
their music to be copied and distributed without charge, it
is a great way to get one's name out and have one's music
heard, but that's their call, not the consumer's.

At my home, yes. At other homes I am not always sure, and am
reluctant to ask.

You can copy music for your own use, from CDs records or
tapes you've legally purchased.

Remember when they were going to release DAT tapes, but
because the quality was so high, the record industry cried
foul, and they never did get out .. but then CDs came out
and then CD burners came around and they didn't like that
either. Just like the movie folks didn't like VCRs.

Why did the people not like vcrs and cd burners, because all
the stuff they feared happening happened. To a lesser degree
for the VCR stuff.

I downloaded music but mostly unknown to me stuff because
I'll never hear it any other way, but I stopped downloading
before the recording industries started to go after
individuals because I wasn't able to listen to what I had
gotten, makes my computer stall if I'm doing ANYTHING other
than listening to the music. But, they weren't losing any
money from me as I can't stand RAP and it seems that
practically anything other than Country, and even a little
of that, started having RAP parts in it. So, if I can't
listen to it before I buy it, I don't buy it... and 15 to 30
seconds is NOT enough as I've loved or hated .intros to
songs that last 4 or 5 times that long and couldn't stand
the rest of it, or if I hated the intro.. and somehow was
forced to listen long enough to get to the rest.. have liked
the rest, but .. hey, I won't ever know that now.. stopped
listening to the radio stations as they're all top 40 [censored],
or oldies..nothing experimental, even NPR is mostly talk
talk talk now.

So.. I'll shaddup ;-)
