Some of us have to be up at 0500 to ride to work.
Definitely the best part of the day in June, I went on a
tour of the city centre without seeing a single car this
morning :-)

Yup, so much for thunderstorms. I did 72.8 miles, over the
Pennines via Stanedge then down to Stalybridge up Longendale
and over the easier side of Holme Moss to Holme then home.
Added to the 27.3 miles yesterday evening around Mirfield
and the SVG thats my ton for the weekend. -

12 miles. But I did have a 6y1d on the trailer and it was
the further our 8 year old had done by a long chalk.ian

century - Leeds - Wetherby - York - Malton - Pickering -
Sutton Bank - Thirsk - Northallerton - Richmond - HurworthI was up for it and everything was going amazingly well -
the first 45 miles done at an average speed of 20 mph (I
amazed myself at this!) then two spokes gave up the ghost
just after I passed through Malton. I considered nursing the
bike through the remainder of the ride and chose to complete
the journey by train as I didn't fancy the prospect of the
wheel folding on me - bummer :-(Despite the unsatisfactory ending, I did get a buzz out of
the pace that I was able to sustain for an extended period
of time. It would have dropped off once I'd entered the
North Yorkshire Moors butsustaining 20mph two and a quarter
hours isn't bad for a 20 stone lard [censored] is it? -

you seem to specialise in doing bike rides on the train :-)

I call it good contingency planning, especially if one's
partner is unwilling to come to one's rescue in moments of
crisis :-)Besides who says that bike rides have to be circular? :-)
I do complete most rides with resorting to trains but I do
have an small collection of tickets as souvenirs of 'failed'
forays :-)I have nothing but praise for the various rail operators in
County Durham, West and North Yorkshire who have conveyed my
and my bikes around the regions. -

I forgot to mention that the last leg of the journey
(Hurworth - Leeds) was done by car (with bike inside)as the
original purpose of the ride was to collect my car that I'd
left up North when I drove up to collect a motor bike to add
to my collection of two wheeled conveyances.I have actually ridden more miles on pedal bikes than motor
bike this week though. -

How do you tell the difference?

recently been exposed to a chicken-poxy baby...)--

(I've developed a sore throat and bunged-up head, and I've
recently been exposed to a chicken-poxy baby...)With shingles, you get the usual run-down symptoms
(headache, sore throat) plus red blisters running in
straight line either horizonally around one side of the
abdomen, or (as I have) down one side of the forehead.
Because the virus lies dormant in nerve cells, the rash
follows the line of a nerve. It's not brought on by exposure
to chicken pox but by either a weakened immune system,
stress or over-exposure to sunlight (I think this is what
happened to me). The doc put me on Aciclovir, which I have
to take 5 times a day. -

as shingles, but have an appointment this afternoon to
confirm or deny.Jon

Commiserations to the shingled. My father had it about nine
years ago, and assumed for a while that it was an allergic
reaction to some gunk he had recently sprayed on his fruit
trees. The medico put him right, just in time for him to
pass the virus to me in the form of chicken pox. Bah!--

irritating/painful. No tight fitting cycling shirts for a
few monthsBizarrely enough, my experience so far is that tighter
fitting clothing is in someways better. A loose t-shirt
tends to flap in the wind, rubbing against the skin, while
my tighter cycling top is more limited in its movement.
Ideally I'd not wear a top, but I don't think that sight
should be inflicted upon the civilised world (Or even
Edinburgh!).The doc confirmed shingles after a single glance. Too late
for anti- virals. Out with the calamine (Not camomile...
brain fell over in the chemists!) and the paracetamol and
codeine. I seem to have got off lightly judging by the
descriptions from many people I've spoken to.Jon
