David Martin said:I only know Nicholsons in Dundee but am sure there are
other places that would be suitable. There is supposed to
be a good shop in Leuchars and another in Perth.
There is indeed a pretty good looking one in Leuchars (not
done business there, but he does Dawes and seems to try and
sell people sensible stuff rather than fashionable-but-
[censored]). Also a fair looking one in St. A's, though again not
done personal business there. Richards in Perth I've only
ever looked around (I was passing, needed something obscure
and popped in on the offchance) but again looks like it's
run by someone who knows what they're at. Stocks Bromptons,
so can't be bad!
Nicholsons are okay and I'm happy to get repairs and fiddles
done there as their mechanics seem on the ball and stuff
like wheel truing and cassette replacement I prefer to throw
money at rather than bugger it up myself. The range of bikes
is from trash to lovely and completely daft sports to very
sensible utility, so as long as you go in with an idea about
what to spend for what sort of bike you're likely to get an
option on something reasonable. If you've got something
particular in mind they do seem happy to get it in for you:
a pal bought his first Brompton from them though they don't
usually stock them, and my Muni came from them. They do seem
to suffer a bit from Saturday Staff Syndrome, but if you
chat to Margaret (the lady with black hair) you should come
out with the right stuff IME.
Further afield, EBC aren't /that/ far away (again, try and
avoid peak times if reasonably possible) and just around the
corner from them are Biketrax who more specialise in
Sensible Bikes (I think it's a better shop in many respects
than EBC, but don't have as wide a stock range and I'm
normally after A Specific Thing, www.biketrax.com).
Kinetics is great, of course, but visits tend to get a tad
expensive! Would he want a KMX, do you think? (or rather,
would Dad be willing to buy one?) ;-)
