The overall incidence is slowly increasing, at least partly
due to the aging population.
Despite this the death rate from cancer is *decreasing*.
As in the USA, the mortality rate from cancer has been
running consistently at about half the incidence rate over
very many years, confirming that about half of all cancer
patients are permanently cured of their disease with
present methods.
The paper actually claims a sixty per cent overall cure
rate, up from about forty per cent in the eighties, but I am
not sure how that figure is derived, and whether various
confounding influences such as fewer serious lung cancers
and more early prostate cancers may be inflating apparent
success. There is no doubt screening programs and better
treatments are improving survival from some cancers.
