That's because the chain is being rapidly worn out by the
worn out cassette (which put all the stress on just one link
rather than spreading it out on several as they wrap around
the cassette).

As the chain wears, it gets "longer" (but does not
"stretch"😉, so it matches the profile of the worn out
cassette better. And of course, it's wearing out what's left
of your cassette even faster than the original old chain
would since all the tension is focused on that one tooth.

So in the end, it's not really "improving", just catching a
compatible disease.

You really need to change the cassette, the chain and at
least your middle chain ring at the same time. I don't use
my big and little rings that much, last time I changed chain
and cassette only the middle ring needed replacing.
