Blah blah blah. Some idiot from there or somewhere says
pretty much the same thing every year. And every year, a
bunch of people who missed it the prior year get all up in
arms and try to organize letter-writing campaigns....

Move along folks, there's nothing to see here.

He probably thinks that football or baseball is a sport. What do they do? Throw a ball around for an hour. With a break halfway. No hand-eye coordination? Try cornering at 40 mph. Or avoiding the guy right in front of you who crashes.

However, that being said, I agree with most any other of the sports.

I gotta agree with this part though:

"And I mentioned the whole guys-shaving-legs thing, right?
Among avid cyclists - a deeply annoying cult if ever there
were one - there's actually a term of ridicule aimed at guys
who don't shave their legs. They're called "Freds." Long
live the Freds, say I. "

Just call me "Fred". That's one reason I could never be a
    serious roadie

Pretty funny. I particularly liked the description of
    hunters.

However, any form of recreation fits the definition of
"sport", so the whole thing is irrelevant.

Is writing rants on the definition of "sport" a sport?

I'm not sure about that. Then again, why does ESPN
    show poker?

    Hey! He forgot curling!

    athlete
n : a person trained to compete in sports [syn: jock]

Olympics Olympic games, or Olympics (Greek Antiq.), the
greatest of the national festivals of the ancient Greeks,
consisting of athletic games and races, dedicated to
Olympian Zeus, celebrated once in four years at Olympia, and
    continuing five days.

Therefore, I contend that since cycling is an Olympic event
and the Olympics consists of athletes, a cyclist is an
athlete. Now a sportswriter on the other hand is just a
fat, lazy, greasy, cheese-steak eating loser who was never
good enough to participate in sports so he writes about
    them instead.

I have not had a good cheese-steak since I left eastern PA,
except on the rare occasion when I returned 🙂

You've obviously never had a luscious blonde walk up to you
in a bar, bat her eyes at you, and ask if she could *please,
    please* feel your legs...

After an encounter like that, your unshaved buddies will be
heading to WalMart to buy a razor and some shaving cream as
    soon as they can walk....

Actually, "Fred" is the term used to describe clueless
newbies, geeks, losers, poseurs, etc., the roadie equivalent
of a "Barney" in mt. biking (Fred / Barney: get it?).
Included would be anybody who actually believes that "Fred"
means guys who don't shave their legs, which is irrelevant,
    false and totally lame.

    Ummm...

The author hasn't actually claimed cycling isn't a sport,
rather they have claimed cyclists are not athletes.

As athletes compete in athletics (defined as a collection of
running, throwing and jumping sports based on the ancient
Greek competitive traditions), the claim that cyclists, are
not athletes seems blindingly obvious to me.

Strange they should state cycling doesn't require hand and
    eye co ordination though.

It's hard to disagree with someone who disses golfers, race
car drivers and bowlers who pretend they're athletes.

But these trolls come out every year about this time.

By the definitions in this article, I guess most runners
aren't atheletes either. After all, it's all endurance, no
hand eye coordination (anyone can run, right?). Heck, most
track and field events probably wouldn't qualify as
    athletics under these rules.

And then you have the areas within certain sports. Are
baseball and football players atheletes? Well sure...uh, but
wait, what about a relief pitcher? What about place kicker?
Those are "mono-athletic" activities (as the author calls
    it), so I guess not.
