I got a set a few weeks ago (from jensonusa.com for ~$22) and I really
like them so far. I'm riding dry rocky hardpack most of the time. I
don't know how they perform in the wet.

Definitely not junk, but I don't think they are suitable for every
trail/rider.

I've been using these on the back for years - they grip very well under
power on a slope, even on loose dry trails, and roll quickly. I didn't
like them up front though, scared me to s*it when they folded over on
fast, wide corners (roundabouts particularly) but they are great
on the back.

For the front, I now use something a bit more confidence inspiring like a
maxxis high-roller or some intense rubber. But that's just personal
preference, to suit my riding and trails. You might find that Fire XC
pro's suit perfectly well front and back.

Not bad at all in wet conditions... the only slips I've had with them so
far is on roots during climbs (peeled the bark off a few roots in the
process). I tend to pedal slowly in mud to keep the ruts down. The Fire
XC Pro's have great traction even in loose pine needles, somehow they
find the soil underneath.

when some of the web vendors were selling Panaracers for a reduced price, I
read that they were made in Taiwan, not Japan. I have both and can't tell
the difference. I think you'll be happy with them.

I also ride Panaracer Fire XC's as my regular tire. But there is a
_big_ difference between the ones made in Japan and the ones made in
Taiwan. Make sure you get the Japanese tires -- they are much more
supple. The other thing to remember about the Panaracers is that they
are a poor choice for a bike that is going to do a lot of miles on the
street, as the knobs wear amazingly quickly on pavement.

Anyway me and my buddy, Tucker, the border collie, put in about 8 miles
today. Tuck's owner only walks him a few miles a week and I ran him for 8
miles, 3 days in a row. He's toasted. When I finished riding I remembered
what you had written about supple sidewalls. I have a Taiwan Panaracer up
front and the Japanese on the rear. Front pressure 35, rear 38. I tried to
see a difference in side to side movement. Is that a supple check? Can't
say I saw more / less supple. And what would supple do for me? I was
riding a Hutchinson Air Lite Scorpion - now that's got a supple sidewall!
Felt like I had a basket ball up front.

I just put one on the back of my old bike (for son to ride). Seems good so
far.
I have Panaracer Darts on front of both bikes, at this price range they are
a great tire, I have always sworn by them.

Taiwanese version of the same tire. (Something like 120 vs. 65 TPI,
but don't quote me on it.) Like you, I have one of each on my Fisher
right now. Take the tires off the bike and just feel them. The
difference between the nice tire and the cheap tire is obvious.

Whether that difference is as obvious with the tire on the bike is a
matter that I am sure can be debated.

I do like mine, but they are [censored] useless in mud. The knobs are close
together and they just clog up quickly turning the wheels in to heavy
slicks.

Thanks, I'll pass on the Google search. I can understand the TPI stuff
making a more/less supple tire.
btw........I was looking to see if I had an unmounted Taiwanese tire, I
don't.
What I do have are a 1.8 and a 2.1 new Japanese tires and FWIW I there's
quite a difference in the tread knob pattern.

I did a little searching of web vendors and found some sites described them
as 60 -67 TPI from Taiwan and 127 TPI from Japan.

Some didn't say. caveat emptor.
