    as it's pretty big.

    GST add 10% = $46.30

    Total cost about $610. You're still streets ahead on the local price.

    I am considering purchasing a hard shell bike case from the US.

    One model I am interested in, Trico IronCase, sells for around $1000 here
    but around $300US over there.

    Even allowing for generous exchange rates, it represents a substantial
    saving.

    What do I need to be aware of?
    What is the experience of others who have purchased bike gear from OS?
    What will customs charge me? Duties? GST?

    Any advice is appreciated.

    I would say you can add at least $US250 for freight. Bike frames cost about
    that much to ship from the US via services such as UPS or Fedex. The charges
    go on a combination of size and weight.

    My understanding is that GST is only applied if the calculated GST of
    goods, shipping and insurance exceeds $50 (ie. the amount you paid is
    over $500).

    one way UPS can afford their glamour cycle team is to gouge you on
    international airfreight rates. Products often look reasonably priced
    but add in the freight (and often air freight is the only option at
    purchase time) and the price doesn't look so hot. It maybe worth
    emailing them and asking for a better freight rate before purchase

    Get the store to quote the freight costs by weight.
    Ask if they will freight it via USPS Global Priority (Airmail).
    I did this for a small item from the US that cost AUS$611.33 (at the then
    Aus/US rate) and included AUS$40 USPS.
    Customs did not impose any GST or cost recovery charges.
    The package was delivered straight to my house in 6 days.
    I am not sure if a larger package will attract the attention of Customs.
