Oh well...goodbye to the Brooks

Congratulations for not succumbing to myth.
Lots of great saddles out there.
For the consumer, the problem is usually getting time to ride one (with
little cost) before choosing definitively. I loved my Concor's (2 over 16
years) in spite of their weight, etc. If I was comfortable, then I could
ride farther, faster, with no distraction on the not-so-sunny side.

FWIW, I recently bought an SLR (~$100 w/tax & shipping) from Performance.
Three rides; almost crippled. (And I *really* wanted to like it, as I'm a
closet weight weenie.)

Returned it to local store, so all I ate was the freight. (Bike poetry of
sorts?!?)

Just as I posted earlier, if you did not get along with a Swift, chances are
the Swallow would be the same. How many miles did you give it before
bailing? I'm trying a Swift and wonder how long I can hang in there. It's
not too bad but if things don't improve...back to my Fizik Aliante, the best
of the regular saddles for me so far.

Hit by a 1991 Dodge dakota P/U in July of 2002, while riding my bike, hit from
behind. Broken L1/3, I contiue to have back 'problems', particularly when
trying to support myself when riding. Any extra weight on my hands aggravates
my back. A more level saddle reduces this weight, making my back feel better.

Hi, I just took a look at the link that someone posted on R.B.M., that
is a beautiful saddle. I'd probably keep it as a collectors piece
and/or an investment, odds are it will go up in value. It is almost
too nice to ride.
I really like like my Prolinks, but someday I will have to try a
Brooks.

Yeah, and the Model T is the best car ever made.

"Sewups last longer and ride better than any clincher."
When I finally realized that I was spending more time patching and
resewing my Criterium Setas than I was riding, I figured I would try
some clinchers. That was in about 1988. I may have a flat every few
thousand miles on clinchers as opposed to every few hundred miles on
sewups.
As for ride quality, I was riding on that leather saddle when I rode
sewups. Nothing was comfortable.

That kept me from racing. I mighta been a contenda!

If the sheep are raised in a wet climate, will the wool be pre-shrunk?

Funny and agreed! Well, on everything but the Brooks--I'm on my third now,
a Champion Flyer (B17 with springs) which was comfortable on day one, but
brilliant after 1000 miles. Sometimes they'll just not break in right if
you fool with them (no ball peens or water soaking please, just ride
it)--my last b-17 spent 6 months outside before being recovered
(stolen)--I was able to recondition it, but the leather fibers said "no
way!". It was still comfortable, but didn't have the nice tight "spring"
of a proper Brooks. My new one just disappears under me and keeps the bits
nice and dry 🙂 The springs add a couple hundred grams and annoy the
wieght weenies (and soak up road buzz) :P

Ok I agree with what you say, 'cept wool doesn't do me like it does you.
I love light wool sweaters/jerseys - no undershirt required. And no
way it holds stink like polyester.

The amazing thing about polyester is that you can wash it, after which it
will no longer stink.

Their track pumps are a different flavor of horse than their frame pumps.

Besides, we all know how corperations that import bicycle accessories from
tawain never go out of business, get bought out, or get dropped from the
selection at the local bicycle shop. We also know how injection molded
plastic parts last such a long time under cyclical high stress loads and how
the models remain the same from year to year guarenteeing the availability of
replacement parts from the manufacturer for years to come. Pump manufacturers
also never tinker around with the design and produce a few turkeys that never
work right or fall apart within 1 year of usage.

Speaking of durability your 1974 Campy headset, much like a Silca pump, is
simply too heavy, overbuilt and extremely clunky to adjust and use. The
perfect headset is a lightweight integrated one with proprietary parts like
the kind Cannondale put in some of their high end framesets. Cannondale always
had the best business planning of all the bicycle manufacturers and never made
an expensive product on wheels they would no longer would be able to support.
