I rode with him a few times. He's an obvious natural, but gave up racing as a junior, and got more into yoga and organic farming.
Curious, but I don't think Art Walker ever knew who had a former national road champion on campus 🙂.

Those were halcyon days for Wisconsin cycling. Greg Demgen, Connie Carpenter, Sarah and Mary Docter, Eric and Beth Heiden, and Mark Frise also hailed from the area. That many of them were also speed skaters in West Allis (Milwaukee suburb) was not coincidence. Even Lemond met his wife there.
I remember I first saw her at the nationals at Bear Mountain in '81--she won the intermed. women's road race. In Velo News, Eddie B was quoted as saying "Is for me another Beth Heiden."

Andy is from North Dakota. He had an older brother going to school in Madison. North Dakota is not a very good place to be if you have dreams of being a hot shot bike racer, so he left. As Carl has noted, Wisconsin and the upper Midwest had an unusually high concentration of top talent. The speed skaters had a lot to do with that.
His sense of timing was good. He left for Colorado just as the focus began moving west.

Wow. I remember seeing him race at the Worlds in Colorado Springs in '86. Don't remember what event, but he was going well, at least in the early heats. Back then he was frequently referred to as Meathead, a moniker I assumed he would have objected to. But when asked about the race in an interview, he quipped, "Nobody can beat the Meat today."
Hey Mike, where's the CBX? Almost crashed my truck on the highway a few weeks ago trying to stay alongside another truck and trailer with what sure looked like an almost showroom condition CBX complete with the luggage buried in a pile of household stuff. The rider/collector in me really wants one. The service tech in me say's "Are you nuts?" They are sweet when you get 'em tuned right though. Bill C

That makes sense. I spent part of my childhood in West Allis. Do they still have races at the mile oval at the State Fair grounds?

The 900F is all but two cylinders of it, and much more stable on the track (velodrome that is) <grin>.
I've worked with a bunch of riders in Texas, in Houston and Frisco. Not coaching though. Drive like a slave, but keep the tactics and training advice to myself.
I wanted to take the BCF derney driver training course last year when I was in Manchester for the World Masters. Got there too late. Might do it this year. Now, if only that meant I could drive for someone over there.
Demi-fond is probably more my style. I have a couple of pals who might take me up on that.
