Never ceases to amaze me how when a cyclist has a good ride in a GT and wins
or makes the podium, that people say he is the next "Whoever" only to see
said rider rarely if ever come close to that ride again. Berzin, Leipheimer,
Botero, etc. At least Cunego hasn't started talking about how he is going to
thrash Lance in a few weeks..although it is still early

Very close, and his willingness to take off solo without seeming to suffer any
negative consequences is similar.
Quoted message said:(b) Armstrong
He's far less of a [censored], plus he can't TT. Nobody else right now is as
dominant, both in the TTs and in the mountains, as Armstrong is. Mayo seems to
be determined to be the next Armstrong tho...
Quoted message said:(c) Jalabert
Jalabert's career arc was uniquely his, I can't see any meaningful comparison.
Better compared to Brad McGee.
Quoted message said:(d) VDB
Far, far less fragile. If one of VDB's teammates had called him a [censored] and
an idiot, even in his prime, he probably would have retired that night.
Quoted message said:(e) Sevilla
Somewhat, but in the last Vuelta he found himself helping someone else who is
pretty similar to Cunego - Alejandro Valverde.
-Sonarrat.

While I agree that it is overworked you apparently missed this year's Giro.
Cunego showed surpassing power, not a good luck win. I think that he will be
the next Jan Ullrich.

Tom, I'm not sure that he is going to be Jan. I think he's more of a climber,
though we're talking shades of gray.
I hope that he's the hero that Italy can get excited about and get behind.
Cycling needs a young clean European star, and I think he just may be it. He
has had a long trail of results. He has excelled at every level. he was
identified as a "talent" early and signed on that basis, and has proven the
faith.
It's going to hurt, at least a little, to support an Italian, not a German or
American, but I think this kid is the real thing.
My wife and family will love it though since the family name is DeMasi.

The point being that he's 22 y.o. and just won several one-day races
and a GT in a stretch of 6 weeks. What will his career resemble?
Dominant in all disciplines? Focused and specialized in one race per
year? A "jack of all trades"? Granted, Jalabert was a weak stab at
that, but I didn't spend too much time thinking about it. Physically
gifted but unable to keep his head together? Or just a guy who won a
GT in his early 20s then spent a few years, maybe many, trying to find
that form/opportunity again? OK, Sevilla is still young, but nothing
has come close to the Vuelta victory since 2001. This example was
meant to cover the "Berzin, Leipheimer, Botero, etc." path.

Normally I have the exact reaction but in this case it is more justified
than usual, since he has been cited as the "next Pantani" for several years
at least according to Martinelli (DS for Saeco as well as Garzelli and
Pantani when they won their Giros). He may do much better than Pantani from
the looks of it.
He is no flash in the pan. This Giro was an early confirmation of his
expected results.

Well, not necessarily so, because the guy (as many other people in the
North of Italy) has Germanic roots.
The family name Cunego comes from the German word Koenig (King) and used to
indicate the leaders of the Cimbric tribes. The Cimbris were a population
that passed the Alps and settled in the North Eastern part of the Po Valley
around the 5th/6th century AD.
And in fact Damiano is a blue eyed blond.
OTOH I don't know where your wife's family name comes from, but families
whose names start with the De particle usually come from the Centre/South
of Italy and their roots are in the ancient Greek/Roman populations.

There is a neat site to look up where people with particular surnames
reside in Italy:
Put a name into the 'Cognome' box and hit enter. It's pretty
interesting... DeMasi is indeed from the toe of Calabria, the Cunego's
are almost all in the province of Verona, and anglo-saxon names like
'Jones' are to be found both in the large cities as well as a few
clustered around the US military bases.
A lot of typically southern names have clusters around Milan and
Turin, where they migrated after WWII towards jobs and factories.

Thanks! I looked at my own surname there.

There are far more Coppis than Bartalis. And they are much less
