  1. Hey guys,

I have Ultegra 9spd STI on my cross bike. I don't like the feel. It seems
    too light.

Do the DA shifters 'feel' crisper, or more firm?

    Your input is appreciated.

    Yup. They do.

I ride Campy's too and have a DA bike in the living room that I've only
ridden a couple times around the block. I can't get used to the DA
shifting as Campy is so smooth and quick. Maybe more practice is called
for, as I've got a lot of friends who are happy with DA

For 'cross, though I see people riding either DA or XT/XTR or even
mixes. I guess you just have to try it out.

I like the way Campy feels when shifting and the way the levers fit my
hands better than DA. I have a bunch of Shimano hubbed wheels, though, and,
while you can make Campy 8sp shift on Shimano 8sp cassettes, you can't make
Campy 10 do the same for Shimano 10. So I measured DA and Campy cassettes
and figured out the difference ( DA is 5% narrower), modified the cable
take-up drum on the Campy lever and now I can use all my older wheels (just
    need new 10 sp gears).

I normally find that anyone that is happy with DA has never spent quality
time with a good Campy group. DA is not exactly junk, just hard to deal with
when you have had *the best* are are accustomed to it and all of its
    benefits.

Dura-Ace is used by Lance Armstrong...would he risk using anything but the
    very best ?!

Campy makes allot of noise due to the bearings ~

As long as it doesn't actually hurt his performance, he'll use whatever
he's paid to use, just like any sponsored professional athlete. As long
as it doesn't put his bike over its desired weight, and it shifts
    cleanly, nothing else really matters.

That's a ridiculous statement, and you know it. Him and the team are paid
to ride Shimano, nothing more, nothing less. Obviously, it works well
enough to win 5 TdF's (and possible 6 or 7 even), but it has nothing to do
with his personal preference. Of course, Lance and the Blue Train boys
don't use the same DA group you buy off the shelf. They get the 'special'
    stuff made just for him/them.

Also completely ridiculous. You've obviously never had a Campy bike (or you
had one and you were incapable of working on it yourself, so it wasn't setup
properly), or you would know this just isn't true in the least. Campy's
bearings are the best in the business.

    Regards,
    H.

Yeah, try Hugi rims sometime. Talk about noise! (Although mine have been
    great.)

Yeah, I just sold a nice GIOS with 9spd Daytona on it. It was a stealth
    bike. No noise period.

I bought a CX bike last year on a whim and it has slowly taken over position
as my main ride. It has XTR except hubs (Hugi) and shifters which are
Ultegra. It is teh off road capability I love, not the parts.

This combination is as dialed in as it will ever be (I wrenched in a shop
for two years) and it still doesn't come close to the solid crisp shifts of
the Campy stuff. The Shimano action is too light. I find it easy to
over-shift (up the cogs) and the down shifts are spongy (down).

I was hoping that a DA shifter upgrade would help.

Maybe I will get a 2005 compact Campy group instead.

Hah! I was just thinking about how loud the S-Works/Hugi rear hub was today!
    Very loud!

Seems to be well built though.

What is rediculous is some peoples blind allegiance to campy. I'm a
big fan of campy stuff for their history & contribution to the sport
but shamano is good also. In fact i think that the new d/a is the best
out there. Don't forget Campy has produced their share of junk
    products over the years.

It's always bugged me that nobody seems to want to say CAMPAGNOLO,
opting instead for "campy". It's awful-sounding, vaguely derisive, and
cements in my mind the stereotype of the Ugly American utterly
unwilling to learn even a single word of a language that isn't his
own. Besides, I've never heard anyone say "Shimmy" for SHIMANO.

I've always preferred the British abbreviation, "Campag," which
besides being a staightforward truncation of the name, sounds better
    to my ear.

Either one sounds horribly pretentious though.
