What is the timing on the noise? Does it seem to synchronize with your
pedaling, or with the wheel rotation?

I'm pretty sure it syncs with pedaling, but I'll check again.

If it's a heavy "click", approaching a clunk, I would suspect your bottom
bracket.

Roger,

My money's on your brake levers/hoods. I think they have worked a tiny bit
loose where they strap around the handlebar and thus click or make a cracking
noise under pressure, which they are every time you lean the bike over while
climbing.

I would try to isolate the noise, gently tighten and lube various things, if
you still can't find the source, being a big guy you'll want to inspect the
handlebars and stem and also the frame and remove the fork and look at the
steer tube. But that's a worst case scenario, it's probably benign.

My bet is that it's in the stem and it's connection to either the
steering tube or the handlebar. Or (since the stem appears to be
adjustable for rise angle) in that adjustment pivot.

My stems are all the older style quill design. But I get a little click
or creak about once a year. I loosen up the offending connection, put a
bit of grease in there, and re-tighten. Works every time, so far.

I say bottom bracket. At your weight you generate a boatload of torque.
I know for a fact, I used to weigh that. Could be the front wheel

I had the same thing happen to me , it was the magnet on my front wheel
cyclometer magnet clipping the pickup. Happened on every stroke of my
dominanant right leg. When I switched to a rear wheel magnet/sensor it
went away.

got home from a 32 mile ride this morning, I discovered that I have a broken
spoke and that the real wheel is out of true. I think this happened about
100 miles ago, when I first noticed a strange and new "resistance" while
riding along on some fresh & smooth blacktop. I wondered about it then, but
decided that it must be in my mind and that I was just lazy. That was
Saturday. Then I noticed it again on Sunday. Then I noticed it again this
morning. As I got home and about to enter the garage, I got off the bike,
put my hand on the top tube, and began to guide the bike inside. Then I
noticed the resistance again, as now the rear wheel is out of true and rubs
against the brake pad. Argh! I'm a complete bicycle noob!

Thanks, Pete. i'm going to spend some time reading this site. I think I
found the clicking problem (see the post to A Antonovitz) but also found
another one. This site will be a big help. Time ot get a repair stand at
the very least.

I've had loose front spokes do that, as well as all the causes others
have already listed.

If it's a spoke, it'll fail at the elbow if you don't fix it soon.

This site helped me troubleshoot my noise problems well. One thing I
haven't seen mentioned on this list yet is a loose chainring bolt, which
has been a problem for me in the past. The chainring bolts can also
become maladjusted if you don't tighten them in a star pattern - like
tightening the lug nuts on a car wheel (I said the "c" word, didn't I?).
