  1. Some poking around on the web revealed this:

    http://www.warriorscycling.com/cirque.php

On a weekend, close to home, and only one lap (8 miles) on a
    specially-designed beginner's course.

Sure, the race starts at 8:30, but I suppose I can work that out
somehow. I'll probably be so nervous/excited that I won't be able to
    sleep, anyway.

Can you ship me some of your extra-good snackies for good luck?

(yes, that was a pathetic attempt to get a taste of what I've been

Enter the Sport Women (especially if the 10 am start is friendlier for you).
You can always bail after the first lap if it's horrendously hot or hard or
    both.

I don't know that I'll kick all that much ass, even in the beginner
group. Plus, eight miles is much closer to my typical ride than 16 is
    ....

Still, food for thought. Do you really think beginner is that slow?

Because a lot of people have told me that racing has improved their
mountain biking skills. Because I'm curious to see how I stack up. And
because I've met enough female racers now to know that they're not some
separate uberspecies; they're just women who've worked hard at getting
good at mountain biking. A lot of them have had the same issues I'm
    working through.

If I don't like it, I never have to do it again. If I do like it, I've
found a whole new way to freak out my parents!

    Good thought. ;-)

I personally don't enjoy racing - boats, bikes, or any other type - unless I'm
watching. Nor do I particularly like group rides, simply because I am slow on
a bike. But I DO enjoy "freaking out" my mother, and after 49 years, I'm
    getting quite good at it...

Hard to tell, without knowing anything about the event. Might only be two
newbie women in the class; OR might be 50, including some sandbaggers who
    /really/ belong in Sport.

(I was commenting mostly because you mentioned start time; if it's quite a
drive to get there, then the later time might be less "stressful". If not,
then maybe go ahead and ride Beginner, and just have fun.)

Do beginner if it's your first race. I was last beginner in my first race.
They can be pretty fast! Remember beginner racers don't have to be beginner
    riders.

Sounds great. Remember to relax and have fun. In the west, you find lots
of sandbaggers in beginner who should be in sport, so expect good
    competition.

My best advice is to pre-ride the course if at all possible, make sure you
get there early to check in, get your plate, get organized, pee twenty
times, then just relax and have fun.

Very cool! Someone smart once said that you'll regret the things you
didn't do in life more than the things you did. Of course, that's easier
    said than done. :-7

Do the beginner one. Like others have said, just because it's a beginner
race doesn't mean you'll be riding against a bunch of beginner riders.
And, there will be a few riders who can't get a win in sport class and
drop back down to beginner just to try to get a win.

I did a beginner race about ten years ago. It's the only race I've ever
done. I'd been mountain biking for a few years, so I thought I'd do
pretty well. I finished in about the middle of the riders who finished.
I'd never been so exhausted in my life when I crossed the finish line.
Even though I didn't do that great, I felt great about having done it.
Plus, I have a nice picture taken by one of those Race Day type outfits.
Unfortunately, they weren't kind enough to take the shot near the
beginning of the race when I had a look of determination on my face.
They took the shot about a mile from the end when I had the look of
    Thorazine scrawled across my face.

Above all else, have fun, don't worry about winning, and don't forget us
when you're at the top of the pro charts.

Maybe I can get my wife to race in this one...

I'm pretty slow, and I've never raced at all. But I do like to try new
things, especially when they scare me a little bit.

It's less than an hour away, I believe, so that won't be too bad; I'm
just not much of an early morning person. I may cheese out and get a
motel room nearby the night before.

It looks like the course will be ready a week ahead of time, so I hope I
do get to preride it. How far ahead of time do folks generally try to
    be at a race?
