I prefer short arm V brakes (like Tektro mini-BMX 917). Not much
clearance, but enough for me and more power and less hassle than cantis.

What's the hassle with cantilevers? V brakes are meant to save time in a
production enviroment. The extra minute or two isn't important when you're
installing 2 sets. And they are far more adaptable than V brakes.

My Tektro mini-V's have never squealed like my Shimano canti's. No
matter how I adjusted or whatever pad I used on those canti's, they ended
up squealing again. Also, no matter how many times I re-read
Sheldon's set up article, they never had the power of the Tektro's, which
I appreciate on a long loaded descent. My wife especially likes the
reduced hand force needed. They just fit over zefal mudguards over 32mm
tyres on our bikes but that may vary depending on brake boss position.
They look neater than canti's too.

what ever feel or power you want. And there are many more brands than Shimano.
I have Mafac, Suntour and Shimano. Looks are personal.

Only up to a point, which is apparently sufficient for your requirements
but not for mine.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I bought a frame for commuting and it came
with Avid 15 C Cantis. I had a little trouble setting them up. There
wasn't much rim/pad clearance after I had adjusted them for the right cable
tension. I had replaced the Avid straddle wire and triangle with a generic
straddle and disc combo. Once I went back to the Avid straddle, which was
a bit longer all was well. I now have better rim cleance and more of a
road brake lever feel.
