I am just getting into road cycling, but at present am strapped for cash re. getting a road bike. I have therefore put smooth tyres on my mountain bike and am using that for now.
The rear sprocket (gear-thing mounted on rear wheel) seems to have some inherent 'wobble', as the bike is 10 y.o., I am thinking that it needs replacing (plus the teeth are quite worn). I have already replaced whhel bearings front and back. What I was wondering, is whether I can change the mountain bike-type rear sprocket for a road-type unit?, as at present, I could do with higher gearing for road use. I guess I would need to change the rear derrailleur too? The bike is nothing fancy, although it has an aluminium frame, so is fine for the moment.
Any tips as to what might work would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, you can change rear srpockets easy enough. How you do it depends on what you got.No need to change the derailer.If the rear cogs are a casette on a freehub,the wobble could be a loose lockring or excess play in th e hub body.
