With a little supervision and guidance from my buddy Roger the Gadget
Man, I did the following: Changed out the rear derailleur hanger,
put on new chain rings on the front (titanium!!) changed the
elevation of the front derailleur by a few mm's ( lowered) used a
torque wrench on the BB when I put it all back together, and then he
helped me with the derailleur adjustments so I did about 1/2 of those.

You gotta hand it to a guy who keeps Shimano specs for torque,
clearance etc in a file folder in the garage. I liked the digital
calipers, too.
Now all I need is to put a new chain on, and I should be good to go.

Good feelin' ain't it? I get almost as much enjoyment from the wrenching as
I do from the riding. Plus it's nice to know you you're not at the mercy of
the LBS workload to get something fixed or replaced. Once you realize it
isn't brain surgery, there's really nothing that you can't do on/to a bike
if you have the right tools.

around the culdesac. I'm "off the bike" for a week. That is, nothing but
easy spinning a la bike trail. I have massive deep contusion in my quad
leftover from Idaho, and it will head a whole lot better if I lay off for a
week.

NEVER put a bike into an LBS. Fix it yourself. I believe that to
progress with your bike you have to know how it's put together and how
everything works, only then will you know how far to push your rig. Read
*Everything* you can find about your problem and fix it yourself. A good
place to start for newbies is the hayne's bike manual if you can find
it. And theres a wealth of more specialised info on the net. Get
wrenching, girl.

unless your chain is also Ti you can expect some misshifting in the future
as the two metals will wear unevenly.

hmmm, ok. I'll have to look into that time, for a new chain anyway. The ti
rings were a gift from a spare parts box.

I've been running XTR cassettes with Ti cogs for
years without problems.

If you're having problems after installing a new chain, you most
likely didn't replace the chain soon enough. Do you use the
chain-checker tool?

Cassettes and chainrings should last years if you replace your chain
often enough. Ti shouldn't have anything to do with it.
