1W Luxeon Headlight

  1. I recently purchased a 1W Luxeon LED head-mounted light from Harbor
    Freight

    It seems a very good value at the current price of $15.

    The light is very light, very compact and pretty bright. The beam
    pattern isn't bad. It's listed as "water resistant", seems to be
    gasketed. It fits under my helmet.

    The only downside is that it uses 3, AAA batteries, so I imagine the
    full power run time is around 2 hrs (it has 2 power levels).

    The size of the power source is irrelevant to brightness. The wattage
    is only an indicator of brightness - which is properly measured by
    some unit of luminous flux.

    The size of the source does, however have a bearing on the length of
    time that such a light will work. Typical AAA Nimh cells are rated
    around 800 mAh, which means that a light consuming 1 watt should last
    around 3 hours, assuming that higher order effects of discharge rate
    are not significant.

    It's very similar to the Nite Hawk "Emitter", not surprising because it
    uses the same LED (1W Luxeon). The Nite Hawk has a slightly nicer beam,
    mostly because it uses the "total internal reflection" optics -- just a
    fancy name for a solid cone-shaped plug of clear plastic (the HF just
    has a regular reflector). The Nite Hawk was ~$60 -- more to get a helmet
    mount. Nite Hawk claims the Emitter is equivalent to a 10W incandescent
    -- if only that were true. Mine was about as bright as a typical 2.5W
    halogen like the Cateye.

    The big advantages of high power LED lights are: better efficiency (~2x,
    not 10x), whiter light, no loss of efficiency as the batteries droop and
    very long bulb life.

    The easiest way I've found to predict how bright a light will be is from
    the number of batteries and the claimed run time on the brightest power
    setting. The Nite Hawk claims 9 on 4AA's, others will claim 30 (like the
    Planet Bike & Cateye). Planet Bike & Cateye call their LED lights "1W",
    but the math doesn't work (I'm an EE). They must mean 1W "equivalent" or
    something. The 2.5W Cateye halogens that I've used for years get exactly
    2.5 hr on 4 AA's. The 1W Luxeon is almost as bright with fresh batteries
    -- probably as bright on average over the discharge cycle.

    There are some 3W Luxeon lights available, but they're all over $100. I
    might believe those are (almost) 10W equivalent.

    I can't believe how many incandescent lights are still being sold. I
    also can't believe the markups on LED lights, given how much LED prices
    have fallen. I was going to cobble together my own (lots of designs on
    the net, like <http://www.instructables.com/id/E2K9BN5EDKEUBYRD9V/>😉
    with Luxeon LEDs until I saw this HF unit. I may still yet, with 1-3W
    Luxeons in the $3-5 price range it seems nuts to pay the current markups
    on bike lights.

    temperature, which you get only in the testing laboratory; in reality
    you'll not have more than 80% of the output (see thermal characteristics
    in the same Lumileds datasheet). Make your conclusion about other claims
    by Nite Hawk.

    want for a bike light.

    I just modded a Princeton Tec EOS headlamp (they make a bike version too)
    with a Seoul Semiconductor P4 emitter, which is based off the CREE XR-E die,
    and is twice as efficient as any Luxeon out there. Brightness is comparable
    to a 5-8W lamp and consumes about .9W.

    In fact, Luxeon lights have been obsoleted with the new high-efficiency
    products from CREE and Seoul Semiconductor (SSC). You will see CREE-based
    products on the market within a year from now. But modding existing
    Luxeon-based products will give you tomorrow's products today. More info on
    the LED section of CandlePowerForums.com

    Peter, as an EE, you will find the latest CREE and Seoul Semiconductor
    products to be a huge leap over antiquated Luxeon products. It really is
    revolutionary how obsolete the Luxeon products became, overnight.

    I'm surprised you haven't heard of www.candlepowerforums.com and the LED
    section. There a lots of light fanatics out there with some crazy setups,
    like Maglites with 1000+ lumens from 4 Seoul (SSC) emitters. There's quite
    a bit on electronics and forward voltages, showing the halving of power
    requirements.

    Some people are using simple 2xAA flashlights that provide 2 hours of
    runtime at 135 lumens with these CREE emitters, and simply fastening to the
    helmet. These products are here right now, not vaporware

    If you're looking to build, now is the time. There are lots of CREE-based
    homemade MTB lights with instructions on mtbr.com, too. You can get CREE
    and Seoul products for between $6-$7/piece. Let me know if you have any
    questions. I don't have any affiliation with these companies (CREE stock is
    tanking b/c of poor cell phone/LCD sales) but I think their products really
    are killer.

    IE 6 still refuses to open this link, at least for me -- others seem to be

    It's definitely a Luxeon, you can see the device when you unscrew the
    reflector. I don't know if/how it's regulated, it may have a chopper,
    all I can see is a cap & Luxeon on the board side that's easily visible.

    it to 2x output/efficiency for $7 with a CREE, maybe I'll do that.

    Hong Kong, however. It takes about 2 weeks, too. The emitter in that one
    is definitely one of the Chinese LED units, seen in the large pictures.
    They're not that bad... just purple tint, that's all.

    products are here now. Basically, everyone who keeps up with recent LED
    tech knows that until we see it, it's vaporware. Look for the Luxeon III
    X-bin... that was hyped up for a long long time but never materialized. The
    Luxeon K2s, high-power and low efficiency. Lumileds takes everything at

    regular duty cycle. Also, they have no certifications. The one thing they
    do have is consistent tint.

    That's definitely the same housing, I don't know about the LED. Mine has
    the typical little hexagonal board with "Lumiled" on it. Wouldn't
    surprise me if there were multiple versions of lights using this housing.

    Appears to be identical to yours at half the price. Shipped
    directly from Hong Kong, however. It takes about 2 weeks, too. The
    emitter in that one is definitely one of the Chinese LED units, seen
    in the large pictures. They're not that bad... just purple tint,
    that's all.

    That's definitely the same housing, I don't know about the LED. Mine
    has the typical little hexagonal board with "Lumiled" on it. Wouldn't
    surprise me if there were multiple versions of lights using this
    housing.

    Have you used these guys? Prices seem unbelievable.

    I've used DealExtreme with no problems, and know of others who have used
    KaiDomain with no problems except for some items being out of stock and
    subsequently refunded. It's all from HK so apparently you can sell things
    this cheap and turn a profit, plus send it 1/2way round the world.

  17. For someone with someone with no ability nor desire to tinker with
    electronics, what would be your suggestion for a light? Basically it would
    be for a touring tandem. We tour in the summer, in northern latitudes, so we
    only rarely need a light but when we do we need a fairly decent one. Idealy
    it would double as a flashlight. I am not keen on helmet lights because, in
    the past at least, my experience was that lights set lower, e.g., on the
    fork, made it easier to pick out things like potholes on the road; so some
    sort of handlebar or front rack attachment would seem best (plus that would
    work with a flashlight). For this purpose neither dynamos nor rechargables
    would seem appropriate.

    Any suggestions for lights that would work for the above from the Cree/SSC
    products?

    Based on the above thread, the L2D-CE ($50 shipped) fits your bill
    perfectly, uses only 2AA batteries for light output that nears a 10W

    lowest setting will run for 55 hours. No separate battery pack and weighs

    There are other Cree/SSC-based handhelds, but they don't come close in terms
    of small size, high light output, long runtime, and low cost. You really
    get all four instead of choosing just three. The L2D is also current
    regulated, so you get specific output that doesn't decrease over the first
    two hours on the highest mode. Comes with an SOS and strobe setting, also.
    Other handhelds at this power output level are designed for rough tactical
    use, meaning much heavier weight and durability.

    If you wait longer, you will find manufacturers coming out with Cree and
    SSC-based bike-specific products in the near future, but you will pay dearly
    for it. After all, manufacturers know that cyclists will pay anything! 😉

    If you are looking for a completely plug-in integrated system with Cree/SSC
    emitters and mounts, you are out of luck. It shouldn't be terribly hard to
    fabricate a mount a lot like the one above. Just ask your LBS for some old
    reflectors and their mounts and you should be golden. The Cree emitters
    have been on the market for a grand total of 4 months, and the SSC emitters
    even less. Be assured, however, that new products are in the works as we
    speak.

    How's the beam pattern for cycling though? Otherwise it seems great. The
    "above thread" doesn't seem particularly insightful.

    Not that "bike lights" always have good beam patterns either. The current
    1W Cateyes, etc. have a tiny dot of light with no spillover, which is
    almost useless -- in fact scary to ride with, if you need to see where
    you're going. My HL-500 Micro is much better.
