I think the same problems exist in Australia. We haven't completely broken free of our Colonial past. The generous and abused Social Security system here is surely a big contributing factor to our horrendously high levels of taxation. GST here is 10%, on top of personal income tax rates reaching 47% plus 1.5% Medicare Levy (as if Levy is different to tax???) for high income earners. How does that compare to other countries?

Didn't mean to fire you up like that. I guess I asked for it by not making myself clear. When I stated Australia hasn't completely broken free of our Colonial past, I meant that we still follow the Brits in many ways. I was not implying that we are still under Brit rule, and was not implying that the Brits are to blame for our abused social security. Our govt has brought that on ourselves.
My point was meant to make a comparison only. Our govt is allowing social security abuse, similar to the theme in the UK according to the other posts. My other point was that taxation in Australia is very high, and is often referred to as being one of the highest in the world. Hence I asked for feedback on what it’s really like elsewhere.
And what’s this ‘roo whinger caper. Despite my tax gripe, we have one of the best standards of living in the world, great climate, etc. etc. You Brits do have to take the blame for that one. You had first choice! :p
