The dirt road section ought to suit Evans what with his mountain bike pedigree.

The dirt road section ought to suit Evans what with his mountain bike pedigree.

They used this climb in 2008, though a lot of riders are either absent, banned because of doping, returning dopers or suffering mysterious drop off's in form;

1 Franco Pellizotti (Ita) Liquigas 40.26 (19.142 km/h)
2 Emanuele Sella (Ita) CSF Group Navigare 0.06
3 Gilberto Simoni (Ita) Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli 0.17
4 Alberto Contador Velasco (Spa) Astana 0.22
5 Riccardo Riccò (Ita) Saunier Duval - Scott 0.30
6 José Rujano Guillen (Ven) Caisse d'Epargne 0.49
7 Marzio Bruseghin (Ita) Lampre 1.04
8 Domenico Pozzovivo (Ita) CSF Group Navigare 1.43
9 Danilo Di Luca (Ita) LPR Brakes 1.45
10 Denis Menchov (Rus) Rabobank 1.49

I'm sure they'll be slower this time ;)

I'm not able to find any feeds, if anyone knows of any please post them!

So far;
1 SZMYD Sylvester LIQ 43:40 0:00
2 MONCOUTIE David COF 44:06 0:26
3 MONIER Damien COF 44:15 0:35

Can't find any live feeds yet myself.

My prediction:

1) Basso
2) Evans
3) Sastre
4) Scarponi
5) Cunego
6) Vino

Winning time will be 41 minutes and the favourites will all be bunched within 2.5 minutes of that.

I to hope they're slower than 2008 ;)

This is hard to predict.

1. Evans
2. Vinokourov
3. Basso
4. Nibali.
5. Pinotti
6. Scarponi
7. Sastre

Times will be similar to 2008 times, I think.

Good god... Sastre is laying an egg on this mountain.

Looks like Cadel is getting the better of Basso so far. I thought Basso would take the win here, but he is only 4th through the midway check-point. Perhaps he is conserving energy for the second half of the course.

Evans because of the dirt section & because he's like a dog with bone atm.

Garzelli.
Has anyone expected this?
Gadret in third.
Minute slower than in 2008.
I have to admit - it's promising.

Todays winner would having only placed 7th in 2008

Cadels time good enough for about 12th in 2008, slower than Jens Voigt's time.

Strange year that 2008. Or is it 2010. which is strange?
Maybe there was strong head wind today, which passed unnoticed because of the slope?
But I'd rather say there was tail wind in 2008. Noticed on Sella and Ricco later that season, and on Di Luca and Pellizotti lately.
Promising and encouraging.

Ah yes, Jens Voigt that well known mountain goat. Been suspicious of him ever since he won the Tour of Germany for the first time. People that big cannot climb that well without enhancement.

I was surprised to see Nibali beat Basso today, as for Garzelli I imagine he's been resting himself to go for stage wins. He picked a good one to take top honours in! Cadel showing he's got the form to fight this Giro to the last, should be a good last week with him and Basso fighting it out for the top spot whilst a whole host of people fight for the podium! Nothing like tight competition to keep things interesting.

Unless you're a physiological freak like "Big Mig" who is around the same height, and might have weighed more than Voigt during his pro years. Although, one can never be too sure, perhaps Indurain was dirty even though he never tested positive. No test existed for EPO during his reign. However, I would like to believe he was clean.

Who would know about EPO, he failed a test for Salbutamol. Here is some reading;

Cycling's Lords Flunk the Drug Test - NYTimes.com

Drugs in Sport: Indurain allowed to use 'banned' drug - Sport - The Independent

The Way It Was - Washington Times

from some site that is currently down said:
The former Swiss rider said that the five-time Tour champion used the banned substance erythropoietin (EPO) as well "as all the Tour winners from 1992 to 1999".

Former Swiss rider Rolf Järmann said that Miguel Indurain used used performance-enhancing drugs, as well "as all the Tour winners from 1992 to 1999".

In an interview for the German sports magazine Sport Bild, Järmann disagrees with the Tour de France's decision to no longer consider Bjarne Riis the winner of the 1996 race after the Danish cyclist admitted having used performance-enhancing drugs, as, according to Järmann, doping was a usual practice.

Järmann pointed out that if Riis was not considered the Tour winner, Jan Ulrich or Richard Virenque would have to be considered winners and he doubts these riders were "clean".

"Besides, if you remove Riis from the list of winners, you would have to do the same with all the Tour winners from 1992 to 1999. At that time, using performance-enhancing drugs was a usual practice," Järmann said.

Another great stage. It's been a great race so far. The last two stages have seen times slower then in the past and with reasonable power outputs. Maybe things are cleaning up. Still think basso is the favourite, Evans is a chance but will need a good final time trial, and the rest is anyones guess. Porte for top ten would be a shock but a chance. At 25 he might be good in a few years.
