    will a 8-9 speed MTB chainring work smoothly with a 1/8" chain?

    it's for a single speed conversion of a bike with a four arm, 104BCD
    crank. i haven't found such a chainring made specifically for a 1/8"
    chain

    Sure, 1/8inch chains on 3/32 cogs, rings is not unusual.

    Yes. I use one (well, not a "MTB" chainring, but there is no difference
    between a mountain-bike chainring and a road chainring.

    I used exactly this combination for years with no problems.
    Since then I've switched to 3/32 chains because I can no longer
    find 1/8 sprockets for my Spectro S7 rear hub.
