  1. On Jan. 24 in Indianapolis there's a 37-floor stairclimb race. I thought it might be interesting to
do something like this just because it's different.

Does anyone have any experience doing or training for something like this? Any tips or ideas would
    be appreciated.

Note that I'd be doing it just for fun (I wouldn't be competitive in any case) and as a change of
    pace from winter running/triathlon training.

We have the Empire State Building run up in NYC which is roughly 86 floors. No I have not run this
race but have a friend that has run it that last three years.

If you don't have access to a sustained steep hill or stadium steps with repeats then a stair
stepper would help. Depending on you strength and conditioning whether you try one or two steps per
stride. It may be congested and I would review what the rules are for passing. if it was run as a
trail race you need to move over to let someone pass. If it's considered a road race then you can
make the passing person go around you, i.e. the longer path. If you are supposed to move over and
don't you might get pulled backwards and out of the way. 😉

What you will notice, besides the fact it is over very quickly, is how very dry the air is in the
stairwell(at least for the ESB). You will as expected breath through every orifice to get to the top
but you will notice some raspy breathing for a day or so after.

Have fun, I'd rather run up a steep hill outside. 🙂

A friend of mine's a competitive stair climber. Training for it is a no brainer and very sport
specific. Find a tall building and climb stairs.

    a) Can you use the handrails? (Does it have handrails?) This can be a huge advantage; might as
well incorporate some of it into your training.

    b) I find that I start to get dizzy after too many stairs. I usually counter this by turning the
opposite direction every third or fourth floor. Works for me, don't know if it works for
    anyone else.

37 floors is a pretty quick race - probably similar to a mile.

Oh - stairwells can get annoyingly hot (particularly if you're in the pack) and dry. Wouldn't hurt
to check what the "weather conditions" are going to be like in there to ensure that you dress
    appropriately.

Nope a foxy female and unlike your female friends she has two not four legs.
