I've had a Pendle 4-bike tow bar rack for years:
http://www.pendle-bike.co.uk/nulldet.asp?Rack=Tow%20Bar%20Rack
Adv:
Very quick to put on and remove (10 secs?)
Very solid construction
Minimal overhang even with 4 bikes
Rack cannot damage paintwork
Durable
Low drag (compared to roof mounted)
Disadv:
Needs tow bar
Bit fiddly getting 4 bikes on
Won't take 4 off-road bikes (i.e. with wide susp forks)
Need to put packing between bikes to avoid chafing
Not cheap (but worth the money!)
Can interfere with trailer - I can only mount 1 bike with my trailer
It was about the best design available at the time, but there are lots
of alternatives now, including others from Pendle such as the wheel
support rack:

Remove packaging from my e-mail before replying

Cheers - looks interesting - but the tradekar one
http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/itemviewer.asp?ID=19&type=carracks
looks equally sturdy for a similar price so I'm leaning towards that
one now. We have 2 MTBs and 2 children's... looks like they will all
fit OK on this one.
tnx

We bought a
ATERA DURO XL 3/4 BIKE RACK
and have used it all last summer - and its been really good. Its a
platform rack that fits very securely onto a towbar. It as initially a
little fiddly to setup - but once done it locks on solid as a rock. All
four bikes are held very securely.

Cheers Gary - That one does look interesting, but v similar to the
Tradekar one, which works out substantially cheaper. Also the Tradekar
fits to a swan neck, which it looks like this one won't do.
Will post back here once it's all in place with what I went for and
how it all worked.....
