  1. Ok, first a little introduction: I am a 6'3" 200 lb. 29 y/o male who
has been working out off-and-on for about 17 years. There have been
stretches when I was pretty serious and consistent, and most of my
workouts during that time were of the full-body variety
(bench-squats-shoulder press-maybe deadlift). I want to increase the
frequency of my workouts in order to get into more of a daily habit of
exercising (so it will become as common as brushing my teeth), and in
order to do that I think I need to go to a split workout. I have been
    doing a basic push-pull 2-day split (chest-tri-legs one day,
back-biceps the next) for a few months now.

Since I am purchasing some home gym equipment for my new house (I have
been a member of 24-Hour Fitness for about 4 years and I feel like I am
getting robbed) I want to find a workout that takes full advantage of
my power rack/dumbbells/treadmill setup as well. After trolling around
on http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html for a while I came up with
the following push-pull-misc 6-day split workout:

    Monday
    Treadmill - 20 min
    Bench press
    Squat
    Shoulder press
    Dumbbell flies
    Tricep pulldown
    Tuesday
    Treadmill - 20 min
    Seated row
    Deadlift
    Front pulldown
    Dumbbell shrugs
    Dumbbell curls
    Wednesday
    Treadmill - 20 min
    Incline situps
    Standing calf raises
    Hanging leg raises
    Neck flexion
    Dumbbell side bends
    Thursday
    Treadmill - 20 min
    Bench press
    Squat
    Shoulder press
    Dumbbell flies
    Tricep pulldown
    Friday
    Treadmill - 20 min
    Seated row
    Deadlift
    Front pulldown
    Dumbbell shrugs
    Dumbbell curls
    Saturday
    Treadmill - 20 min
    Incline situps
    Standing calf raises
    Hanging leg raises
    Neck flexion
    Dumbbell side bends
    Sunday
    Treadmill - 40 min

I came up with this before doing much reading on the weightlifting
newsgroups. Before I did that reading the only problem I saw with my
workout (and a not-insignificant one at that) was that I was doing
deadlifts the day after squats -- working the legs two days in a row,
for a total of four times a week! Since reading on the newsgroups,
however, it seems to me that an even bigger problem is that this
workout is fundamentally SUICIDE! Is there anyone who thinks I might
be able to make this work? I still like the exercises I have picked,
so I thought of initially modifying it to be a 3-day split by just
doing the Monday, Wednesday, and Friday workouts. That gives plenty of
rest to each muscle, and it still lets me work every major muscle of my
body on a weekly basis. But I might outgrow this before too long.
Does anyone have any advice on other ways I could salvage my original
workout without killing myself? Or should I abandon the split
philosophy in favor of the full body workout?

    Its not THAT bad.
It depends on your ability to recover.

    No.

You want to workout every, right? A 3day split is the best option then.
Your workouts might be fine if you do 3 heavy sets each exercise. NOT going
    to failure.
If that is too much, try 2 sets. Or 3-4 sets with less exercises.

Maybe you should skip the deadlift, and focus on 2 rowing motions and one
    pulldown.
Or 2 pulldowns and 1 rowing motion...

Do you mean that in the most literal sense? Do I have a hook in my
    lip?

You bench and squat on the same day?

You don't lead your workout with the deadlift?

Hey, give it a shot for a week and see how you feel then, but what I
believe you should abandon is the idea of bench and squat on the same
day and not starting your back workouts with deadlifts. Why deplete
your back prior to attempting deads?

    Best of luck.

I'm no expert, just being doing heaps of exercise for many years and reading
up on it heaps. But it seems to me your doing heaps of cardio work as well
as weights, so why not alternate the cardio on one day and weights on the
next, just doing a 5 min warm up on the weights days.

I do that all the time. Weighted pullups with squats work just as well
too. Not only that, but I often alternate sets of these.

    Cool.

(adds DZ to "list" beside Pete)

Seriously, any split you can recover from is a good split.

I take it your goal is just to exercise.
If you want to grow stronger, your muscles need time to rest. That's
when they repair themselves, not during the training.
