6 speed bar ends

Do you have indexed gears? If not, any bar end shifters will do as they
can be switched to friction. I don't know who would still have 6 speed
bar end shifters though. Will a 7 speed freewheel fit? I've never
heard of a 6 speed *freehub*.

The conversion is easy. Shimano 7, 8 and 9 speed bar end shifters are
easy to get hold of (ask your LBS - or, in your case, the good guy at
Halfords) and I _believe_ they will work with Shimano 6 speed systems
(someone will doubtless correct me if I'm wrong).

eBay, or any of the big web sites. Conversion is easy, you'll need a
cable sleeve to the downtube braze-ons. Possibly an adaptor at the
braze-ons if they dont accept a cable sleeve.

One possible stumbling block: if the ends of your bars dont accept the
shifters (most likely if theyre ali) you may need to ream them out a
bit, spend ages with sand/glass paper, or buy steel bars with bigger
hole through them.

every indexed bar end shifter Ive ever seen can switch between indexed
and friction only. Im running 8 speed indexed bar end shifters on a 7
speed cassette in friction mode.

re. freehub - thought it was called that sorry 🙂 its a screwon
freewheel not cassette. I'm not sure if a 7 speed will go in..I've got
shimano downshifters that I think can be either friction or indexed,
but they are indexed at the moment so that probably means I've got
indexed gears doesnt it? - oh and the rear derraliiuer looks like it
will and anyway should be replaced 🙂 which bit controsl whether the
geats or indexed or not ?

Just to confuse things (or open up options...) STI brake levers are also a
possibility...
Best thing, for me, to have happened in bike technolgy (not so) recently.
