  3. Yes and your need 9speed shifters. Don' forget the 9
    speed chain.

    Nine speed shifters are indexed for (drum roll...) .....nine speeds. The
    amount of cable pulled by the shifter is less than that for an 8-speed
    shifter. That's how they get 9 cogs into the spacing that was formerly used
    for eight. The chain is also narrower to accomodate the narrower spacing of
    the cogs.
