  1. Decided to go down to St Kilda criteriums and have a go at one of these fabled races that DONT include a hill! (unlike my only other experiences at Kew).
Having fitted a nice new shiny cluster with a 12-26T (as opposed to my comical 13-29T) I rode down there and tried to locate the course.
Had been there before but my first impression was "What the F4ck is that smell?@$#@???". Oh, goody. the course goes around the Port Melbourne transfer station (read tip/dump).
Found the start and spotted some people putting up a jumping castle! Oh, hang on... its just like on tellie! One of those big inflatable arches. boy, these people have money. Go and sign up. "$15 bucks thanks". WTF???
Must include post-race latte or summat 🙄
Cant see any familiar faces. start to roll around course to suss it out.
Dead flat. hmmm. this might be a fast pace compared to Kew.
Spot one of the guys (sorry, hopeless with names. really good with faces tho...) from the aboc sprint-training session last Saturday. Guy from StK on a noice C40.

The course is a real mix of real rough and real smooth. a few nastee bumps going into corners which must remember. Ride around with a guy, Justen. He's raced out at Glenvale and Sandown(?) and reckons the average speeds are about 36-7kph. [censored]. that's the same as KEW.
And there's no HILL!!! Must be mistaken, im thinking.

Do some of them HCLR's Carl showed me and try to remember all the things/advice people have mentioned 😕
We set off. Wow! sloooow. must be some psychology-thing 🙄
I get up to about 3-4th wheel. People get the usual spooks at the corners.
Good. I like corners. their loss. A couple of guys try the occasional flier out of the corners but people quickly jump on them and bring them back.
(I remember someone saying Dgrade always stay together and end in a sprint finish. Hope something Carl said sticks with me).
One young guy (flemington) keeps doing mini-attacks.
Either he is good and trying to suss out who is strong or he dont like his chances in a sprint-finish Im guessin. He has a strong flemington girl who also keeps doing the same. What's their game?

We start to pick up the pace (well, 45kph) and now in single file and chain-ganging or doing half a lap each to keep the pressure on. I do this once and think. "Why?". So the word 'Gapping' starts to bounce a round in my head.
(get out of my head, Carl 😉 ).
So next turn at the front i just slow down and SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE.
    Haha! People are just sheep.
Carl's words of wisdom (Everyone is riding FOR you, they just dont realise it) come to me. I drop back to about 10th to take a look at everyone.
The same suspects are in the front 6-8. At the 28min mark as we go into the final corner I decide Im feeling good and try something.
I go in wide and out wide in my 53-13T and do 12 hardish strokes and ease up. I look back. 2 younge guys are going nuts trying to get on my wheel and the rest are about 20m back. hmmmmm. All together again and I slip back into about 5th wheel. Im quite pleasantly surprised at how OK Im feeling.
Now think... what to do???... What would Carl be telling me if he were next to me???...Stop thinking...3laps to go...
Obviously this IS gonna be a sprint finish. Just nail that last corner and find a wheel on exit, right?
3rd lap out and people are getting jumpy. the pace is getting up and up.
2 laps out and the corners are getting hairier. decide to go to the outside where there is less bumps and more room to keep speed up.
We get the bell and the young flemington guy jumps on the left.
He doesnt get anywhere and 3-4 people pull him in. Im still counting on that last corner. The back straight is comical. we slow down to 35kph and people are almost sitting up!!!
The flemington girl goes but also gets nowhere.
About 100m metres from that last corner Im 6th wheel.
Im guessing the players are gonna be a guy in a white jersey (my age?), a young brunswick dude on a single chainring and the tallest/strongest looking guy who I have been drafting for much of the race.
With about 30m from the corner the 'white' guy jumps. the brunswick kid gets his wheel and Im on his. They are travelling now and Im thinking they will be coming out of the corner wide.
Sh1t!!! They round tight and i go wide. BUGGER@%#$$!
The tall guy comes up on my left but i hear a crunch of gears so he's out.
Move to my left and try to get on the 2 leaders. By 100m out of the corner they are about 20m ahead of me.
Gun it, damn it. Gun it! Stand and grind it. Forget how much it hurts. its only gonna last a few more seconds. I look up. we are about 100m out and Im closing. Sh!t. Unless there are a bunch about to swamp me Im getting 3RD here.
    Shut up. RIDE!!!
    Grinding. Hurting. Stars.
I look up as I see the arch out of the corner of my eye with about 5 metres to go.
I finish a length back for third. Wooooooohooooooooo!!!!
    I placed. i placed.

But i reckon if there had been 20 more metres I coulda won 😠 😠
    😠
I had to swerve right to avoid running up the brunswick kid's [censored].
They really slowed, but then again they could, couldnt they!!!

We roll around after and i pat the 2 leaders on the back.
Geee. 1st and 2nd sure looks like it hurts!
Im already mad at myself for screwing that last corner up.
perhaps I shouldnt have pinned so much on it?
Perhaps I should been in a bigger gear? (was sprinting in 13-53T but not getting over the top of it)
Perhaps I should shut up and enjoy my first ever place!!!
I pull over at the end and wonder what to do.
Wonder how much 3rd place pays? Who cares, its my first 😄
I hand in my number and the lady hands me...
A little yellow envelope. $20. Hah. My money back and more.
Im getting out of the graphic design business and turning Pro!

I'd like to thank my mom+dad, Hippy et al for advice and Carl for some of the tactical stuff which up until now had been all theory and 200m up the road at Kew!!!
And guess what? 36min, 22.5km distance and 36.5 average.
Jeez. I have been doing that at Kew WITH A HILL!!!
Mental note to self: ride flat crits

I don't really know how strong a sprinter you are, but I'm
thinking you wouldn't be turning that 53/13 over very well.
I don't actually know which gear I end up in for most
sprints but I reckon you should be lower and spinning a bit
faster. Was your Polar running? Do you measure cadence?

Congratulations sir - I would have thought the competition at SKCC would be particularly strong since they have a big reputation for seriousness - so a place is superb! I'm now suitably humbled by yours and Gags' placings and so feel I need to redress the balance on Wednesday.

Incidentally, where exactly is the Crit circuit? I normally train down in the Port on Tuesday evenings, and I agree about the bad smell - although it's usually coming from the Vegemite factory.

I didn't even make it onto the bike today, despite grand plans to go to Donna Buang. Grrrr.

    Cheers,
    Craigster.

So when are we going to get a "Team BR" happening??? If we got 4 or 5 of us
in the same race, we could have a crack at controlling the pace and then
setting up some of the sprinters (read Dutch or Hippy) for the finish.
Maybe Blah and I could have a crack at keeping the pace up for the last 10
minutes or so (mainly him of course) and then give you guys a run into the
last corner and put on a shepherd (are you allowed to spread your arms like
    an eagle??).

I am planning on a couple more Kew crits before the end of the year and then
I might venture a bit further afield once I have got a bit more of an idea
on what the hell is going on during a race.

    Well done Dutch........Ride On,

    Gags

Rock on! Hills are for stick bandits.. gimme a flat sprint any day.

hill crits for training, flat crits for placing ?

What, no BR for you this week!!!

Had been there before but my first impression was "What the F4ck is
that smell?@$#@???". Oh, goody. the course goes around the Port
    Melbourne transfer station (read tip/dump).

Yeah that smell is rather unique but it's not from the transfer station
It's from the factory across the road. I'm not sure what it is though.

Found the start and spotted some people putting up a jumping castle!
Oh, hang on... its just like on tellie! One of those big inflatable
arches. boy, these people have money.

Rob Crow's (Barcelona Olympian) "Ridewiser" campaign inflatable finish line
kite. Looks great but is does have the downside of making the finish line
hard to see from a judges point of view.

Go and sign up. "$15 bucks
    thanks". WTF???
Must include post-race latte or summat 🙄

This race costs a fair bit of cash to put on every week. The corner/traffic
marshals are actually volunteers from the Beaumauris Lions Club. Part of
your entry goes to the Lions club itself. The council also takes a cut in
the form of a person on site to ensure permits are being adhered to
(formerly the police did this for around $500 for the morning). There is
also the hiring of a Toilet from Kennard's Hire (near turn 3) for the use of
riders. (The use of the transfer station toilets is no longer allowed).
the truck driver from Extra Transport is also paid for his time. The truck
that he drives is supplied by Extra. Extra also supply storage space for
all the equipment used. The First Aid person for the day is one of many from
a pool that has been trained by SKCC for the purpose of being there on
    raceday.

The remainder is Prize money that is allocated across the grades. A grade
gets a higher percentage of the pool than the next grade down etc. The
reason for this is to give one incentive to get to a higher grade and to
also deter those in higer grades from riding down a grade. I'm not too
sure if this system actually works for the later!!!

Cant see any familiar faces. start to roll around course to suss it
    out.

If not for Metro track champs I would have been down there. It's a pity
that you don't get any prizemoney for Metros because I managed a Bronze in
the MMAS2/3 Pursuit and Silver in the MMAS2/3 scratch. I think I got fourth
in the MMAS2/3 Time Trial yesterday (Wasn't too thrilled with my effort for
that one). Dutchy, you thought SKCC crits are expensive, these cost $17
per event. And when you think about how long a 500m Time Trial takes (35-
45secs) thats a lot of money.

    Quoted message said:

The course is a real mix of real rough and real smooth. a few nastee
bumps going into corners which must remember.

Especially that one on turn number two. Have seen a few loose it on that
    one.

We set off. Wow! sloooow. must be some psychology-thing 🙄
I get up to about 3-4th wheel. People get the usual spooks at the
    corners.

It's usually done in D Grade so that the new riders can get the feel of the
course as a pack before the racing starts proper. Occaisionally this is
given as an instruction during the race briefing by the race director.

    Quoted message said:

Obviously this IS gonna be a sprint finish. Just nail that last corner
and find a wheel on exit, right?

Getting that last corner right is a bit of an art. From my experience there
are 2 ways to take it. The first being if you are on the front of the
pack - always take the inside line at full speed from a wide-ish entry. If
you are not in that position take the wide line the whole way through which
keeps you out of the crush for the inside line as well as leaves you in the
clear for an uninterupted view of the finish as well as a good choice of
wheels to get on for the run to the finish.

    A little yellow envelope.

That would most likely have been Jenny. What a champion she is. SKCC would
not be the same without her.

Enjoy the moment Dutchy, cos C grades just around the corner if you keep
    this up.

So when are we going to get a "Team BR" happening??? If we got 4 or 5 of
    us
in the same race, we could have a crack at controlling the pace and then
setting up some of the sprinters (read Dutch or Hippy) for the finish.
Maybe Blah and I could have a crack at keeping the pace up for the last 10
minutes or so (mainly him of course)

Oh good; I am developing a rep as an obliging idiot... Of course, Brad McGee
leads out for Cookie... sounds like a plan, sort of.

No not at all. Besides 'O-I' would never catch on as a nickname 🙄

    "Oye. Oi. what ya dooin?"

Besides, i think Gags might have me pegged as a sprinter based on the fact that i wheel suck then jump. nobody said anything about me doing it fast. Hippy was whippin my [censored] on about 4 gears lower than me, so delusions of being a sprinter shall remain in my head 🙄

They seemed to have a small army of people involved. rather impressive and yet made me realise how much 'KISS' wins the day at Kew

Having the ladies there certainly was a refreshing change, as well as many
    women riders too. good stuff!

Luckily they hold up big shiny signs with funny heiroglyphics on them with strange shapes like '3' and '2' and then a funny clanging thing which apparently is named a bell. (shutup Hippy 😉 ).
No doubt next week I shall get dropped and come clattering back to earth...

Seriously tho. It occured to me as I came out of that last corner that i need (if the opportunity presents iteself again) to go 100% with my own strategy and not ride reacting to what others are doing when its at that last corner.
Oh, well. a learning experience 🙄

Well done! I can 'C' another grade in your future...

  16. At the last corner, once you're 100m or so from the line, there is no
more strategy. There is only SPRINT AS HARD AS YOU CAN! (preferably
in a straight line, TOWARDS the finish). From memory the Pork Medalion course is around 150m from T4 to the finish?

Do u think Carl can get us some of those big shiny signs? 😎

U hit the nail on the head with the hardest bit - 1) being convinced enough that you really do know what you're doing out there (hahahaah yeah yeah says she, just waiting for that big long hill - it's her only chance!!) and 2) having the 110% balls enough to commit 200% to your killer winning strategy.

There's only one way to find out...

  19. Well done Dutchy!!!

Racing can be a beeeeatch. But the highs definitely make up for the lows.

well, tonight's Kew crit was a subtle thud back to earth!

finished about tenth and hung on till about 3/4 of a lap to go and finished about 50m back. Absolutely NOTHING left on the last 2 laps. kept telling myself to go faster but nothing there. Still another small improvement. Craigster was just behind me apparently.
