I think the glasses or helmet mounted mirrors (like the Take-a-Look model)
are better. They don't suffer as badly from road vibration, and they allow
one to see a wider area to the rear with just a slight twist of your head.

But, any mirror is better for situational awareness than no mirror at all,
and those do look interesting.

Has anyone here used the mirror that mounts on the top tube? Have seen them
in stores, but never tried one.

a helmet mirror and all I could see was my shoulder. I might try this
one.

Lets see, I can be a troll or an idiot ... tough decision. Well, I am

I was being serious. I have tried a helmet mirror while riding my road
bike and I found it difficult to see past my shoulder or helmet. Maybe
my ears stick out too far - which is bad for my aerodynamics too.

I find it much easier to glance back than to try to see back with the
helmet mirror. If I have to sit up, turn and tilt my head to see with
the mirror, it seems easier to just glance back. The main problem with
glancing back is the tendancy to turn the bike when doing so.

It also seemed difficult to get the mirror in a postion that was not
blocked by sunglasses and within swivel range of my eyeball.

I have only tried one helmet mirror (I think it is a "Third Eye Pro"
http://store.yahoo.com/penncyclebuy/564-015.html )and it is possible
that a different one might work better. The take-a-look mirror seems
to get good comments.

The mirror now lives in a box along with several uncomfortable saddles
and other dysfunctional gear.

Of all of the mirrors I have tested I would say that the Take-a-Look
glasses mounted mirror is the best. The handlebar mounted mirrors
usually work well in one position or another, but not all positions.
The glasses / helmet mounts allow you to turn you head to increase
your field of view.

Handlebars mounted mirrors have the advantage of a constant frame of
reference (when riding in a reasonably straight line), so the bearing to
objects viewed in the mirror can easily be determined. With a head
(eyeglass or helmet) mounted mirror, bearing can only be determined
relative to the rider's head - since the direction of the rider's head
can and does change, determination of bearing of the objects viewed in
the mirror is not possible.
