No, but these days the US has better drug testing technology (and
enforcement), and "tested" US lifters need to be more careful and
restricted in what and when they take than do "tested" lifters in
certain other countries.

I'll admit I don't know much about the history of drug testing back to
the 70's. Is it possible the same was true back then?

No, but these days the US has better drug testing technology (and
enforcement), and "tested" US lifters need to be more careful and
restricted in what and when they take than do "tested" lifters in
certain other countries.

No. Steroids were pretty much legal. Ask Mike Bridges.

And Carl Lewis pretty much shows drug testing in American T&F was aimed at
making sure you didn't get caught internationally. Same as the other guys.

Then it is [censored] for sure. Until the breakup of the Soviet bloc there
was no organized powerlifting to speak of in the Soviet Union. They only
brought their science to sports which gave them olympic medals. Check the
numbers for Soviet powerlifting. Russian powerlifting - yes.

Plus you'd have to tear apart a person's body to move all the necessary
insertions. I'm calling [censored] on that one. Let's see some proof. WHo
are they saying it about? Sivokan? Mor? Where are the scars?

Build up under the patella. Move the hamstring further from the joints at
both origin and insertion. There are ways. But it would be very difficult
and powerlifting simply isn't that big a sport in Russian and it was
non-existant in the former Soviet Union.

It's excuses is what it is. Blame the drugs. Blame the technology. The
fact is that weightlifting is culturally huge in Eastern Europe and they
don't lose all their top athletes to pro sports. Simple as that.

That's right. Powerlifting won't earn you a living no matter here or
there. I'd believe in operations like that for weightlifters in USSR
when the sport was state-sponsored, but now everybody is pretty much
on their own and you cannot just drop by any hospital there and ask
them to move muscle attachement points for free.

Well, drugs might be a little different. In a sense that Anabol and
such were pretty much a staple for PLs/WLs in ex'USSR up till now.
Commonly accepted view is that it is very difficult to make Master
of Sports in PL without drugs (possible, but not for everybody).
Though they're cracking on it now, so it's probably going to be like
with BB here (most of the elite will use it, but at least it won't be
readily available to any teen who wants to bulk a bit).

Nobody in particular. Like I said, I heard a rumor. Also, I heard it
was current practice.

The thing is, when you cut a tendon or ligament and then re-attach it,
it does not heal perfectly - it's always weaker in that point.
Especially if you're attaching it to a different part of a bone - the
bone-tendon interface is a tricky one. So I'm having a bit of trouble
believing that a tendon re-attached this way can still hold any
appreciable amount of weight. A person might be able to walk after
this was done, but powerlifting?

My experience is the same. As a general rule the body heals stronger than
the original - bones, for example.

One thing I had heard of in the past is the Soviets doing experiments and
breaking bones on lifters systematically to get stronger bones. Once again
I'm a little leery. They may have tried it on a few inmates in Siberia to
see what happens, but I'd be suprised if it was done on their elite
athletes.

Bones, yes; but I'm not sure if it's true for tendons. I could be
wrong.

When I was researching hand surgery for my wrists (thank God I didn't
go through with it), one of the listed drawbacks of the surgery was
that the scar in the tendon is not as strong as the tendon itself -
tendons don't generally heal very well.

John was talking about tendon insertion points - tendon on bone. A
severed tendon may not heal well, but the bones are so metabolically
active that tendon on bone heals very well.
