  1. I was thinking about making some pasta, just tossing it with butter
and parmesan cheese and a friend says a cookbook he has says to also
add freshly ground black pepper. Huh? I never really thought much
about adding pepper, but do you think it would be good?? I think some
red pepper might do, but black...I'm not sure.

OK - nobody but Dudley and I can read the question I'm going to ask him.
Everybody else turn around. Don't look.

OK, Dudley. It's just you and I now. I'm going to let you in on a cooking
secret. The interplanetary federation of cooks could have me killed for
this, but I think it's worth the risk. Are you ready? Are you capable of
taking 2-3 tablespoons of cooked pasta, putting them in a bowl separate from
the rest, adding whatever seasoning you're curious about, and then tasting
    it?

Holy [censored]. This is huge. Call the press. Call Food Network.

    See?

Now that was much more pleasant and polite!

    Well done Pete.

    And a good suggestion...

It's what I do when I'm trying new flavor combos.

If you put oil instead of butter, Black pepper and Pecorino Romano cheese,
you will make the so called "Pasta cacio e pepe" a roman recipe!!!

Nah, I mean his former posting name was Bozo. Mostly likes to see if
he can something started by asking really elementary questions or
posting links to odd stories. A fairly harmless kind of trolling, I

I tried a fettucinne alfredo recipe from the back of a store-brand pasta
box. never again 🙂 That ingrained in me the habit of checking a few
different recipes for something before attempting to try a new recipe.

Don't be ridiculous. In a restaurant kitchen, the OP would've been pantsed,
thrown in the street, allowed to stay out there for 10 minutes, then thrown
in the freezer. What the hell's going on here???? Does everything need to be
"tested" in a web forum first nowadays?

Could have been the first fancy meal I made for my now spouse of 24 years: The
lasagna recipe said to add one tablespoon of oregano leaves and I added oregano
powder. It really was *not* the same..

  16. Yes, but I don't think the OP is in a restaurant kitchen--he is simply
asking a question--no need to get your shorts bunched in a wad over it.

Dudley, go ahead and try it--sounds good to me. Let us know how it
    tastes.

Add some clams and garlic, and you've got the recipe I use for clam
sauce. I got it from a genuine Italian person. I like a little
pepper along with the butter and cheese. : )

Aaargh. That brings back 30+ year memories of making an elegant shrimp
dish which called for thyme leaves and I was sure powdered thyme was
an OK substitute. We threw out most of the shrimp and I didnt use thyme
    for the next 10 years.
