  1. Hi;

Would some kind soul please point me to a site that gives clear
simple instructions on how to adjust these new fangled gear
shifters, which we are all now forced to use; the ones that have
    fixed settings for each gear.

I know that the adjustment is done by lengthening and shortening
the cable, and that it is essential to get the top and bottom
ones right. Mostly what I don't understand is how one
determines that the chain is exactly aligned up with a gear.

I am trying to adjust my wife's rear gears because it is obvious
that the guy at the shop she uses has no idea how to do it.

    Start here:

    http://www.parktool.com/repair/byregion.asp

click on "derailleur systems" and go from there.

You might want to "bookmark" the Park site; IMO, it's the best source
of bicycle "how to" info on the internet.

    1. It is also an excellent source of bicycle information.
    2. Mentioning Sheldon's site annoys Ozark Bicycle. 😉

    Thank you for the reference.
I found the page good and a useful alternate perspective.

However, #2 above just makes you look petty and vindictive
to someone like me who is completely unaware of your past
conflicts, especially since Richard's information was timely
    and useful.

I noticed that my wife's bike has 9 gear disks (cassettes (?))
but 10 indexes on her shifter. Is this normal and acceptable?

No one surpasses "Richard" for petty vindictiveness here, especially
IRT Sheldon Brown. Such as poring over Sheldon's website to find
niggling "errors" or perhaps, info in need of updating (at worst), and
then reporting his findings in a nasty and sarcastic manner in posts
to this newsgroup, instead of, as Sheldon has requested, sending his
    input via private email.

Not to mention "Richard" not being above kicking a guy when he's down,
as Sheldon has reported serious and debilitating health problems,
beginning a year and more in the past.

I say this somewhat reluctantly, but if you compare Sheldon's site to
"Richard's", there's a clue right there of where this behavior might
    originate.

Tom Sherman told you the truth, too <g>.

It's OK, you'll get your shifting tuned up and go on. Good thing you
didn't mention having a 12-tooth cog on any of your bikes. That's
something else that sets "Richard" off, referring again to those "past
conflicts" you've mentioned <g>. Petty, vindictive, and ignorant, too,
in spite of efforts to inform.

But, in fairness (hey, somebody's got to do it!), "Richard" sometimes
posts useful info along with the dross, as you've seen.

Good afternoon, Zarkie! Hope that wasn't too stiff for you. Working
    today, or newsgroupin'? --D-y

So long as the chain shifts cleanly accros the cassette, yes, there is
often an "extra click" on shifters. Just be sure to adjust the RD
limit screws to keep the chain on the cogs.

The google groups site has a little yellow notifier: "Your post has
    been successful".

    I agree.

Accepting criticism is not your long suit, 'Zarkie.

I suggest your credibility might be enchanced if you argued substance
instead of deleting content and flinging mud.

Ready for something new, turning a page in your life, etc. etc?

BTW: Could you post a URL to your own bicycling info site? Thanks! --

  11. Hey, OP-- was I right about 'Zarkie's 12 problem?
