It's probably not an adjustment, but rather the spring not catching in the
shift lever. That happens more often than not in bikes that have been
sitting around for a while. Try flushing it out. We use PowerLube (available
at finer auto parts stores everywhere), which I feel works quite a bit
better than WD40, but there's no harm in trying WD40 to see what happens
(you can always spray PowerLube back into it later).
