Well I am in the happy position of being able to compare recumbents with
old Moultons. Either one is very, very different to the norm. Both are
very comfortable to ride, and good load carriers. For long distance work
I take the 'bent, for shorter distances, particularly that involve low
speed manoevering through traffic or farcilites, I take one of my three
Moultons.

cost me £25, plus about £75 for tyres, tubes, chain, computer, balls for
many of the bearings, a fiver for an old Brookes saddle, etc. Plus a
couple of days in my workshop to rebuild the front suspension. I reckon I
could do it again in half a day, having done two now.
My Speed Ross 'bent cost me nearly £1000 new, including the panniers,
computer, pedals, bottle cage, etc, and it was at the cheap end of the
market when I bought it in 1998. Secondhand it's worth about £500, So
your budget is going to take a beating unless you've got the skills and
tools to take something pretty worn-out and fix its problems.
If you would like to travel to East Cambridgeshire you can try all of them.
And that applies to anyone going to the Mildenhall show at the end of
August. I take a Moulton one day, normally Sunday for the club ride, and
the Speed Ross the other, normally Monday for the Cambridge 'Bent Tendency
trip.
