So sorry to have been silent for a while! Warning, this post
contains a rant about a jerk I met this weekend so... read
at your own risk!
The important things first - still exercising away,
haven't lost the 2 pounds I gained last week. Didn't gain
any more though!
Things around here have just been going crazy. The exam is
over with (May 1) - I have no idea how I did on it.
Hopefully I passed, I'll find out at some point. One piece
of paper they sent says 8 weeks, another say 12 and the guy
giving out the exams said 4! Nothing like consistency!
DF was just in town for a conference and to celebrate his
birthday. Friday night we had dinner out (teppanyaki) and
I found that I was really pretty full just from the soup,
little salad and appetizer. Didn't stop me from eating
most of the entree though. At least dinner was spread
over 2 hours!
I made a birthday cake for him, from scratch no less. Dark
chocolate cake with chocolate icing. The good part about
this is that I don't really like chocolate cake. I had one
little piece Friday night, didn't have any Saturday and sent
the rest home with him on Sunday. Now if it had been another
type of cake I don't know that I would have been that
successful at avoiding it.
Saturday night we were out at a banquet for the conference.
Dinner was pretty good, had the chicken
(buccacinos.commenu.phpOpen ↗ - Pollo Pesto) which was
the least "offensive" of the entrees on the special menu for
the banquet. Not that the others were rude or anything, they
were either seafood (which I can't eat) or smothered in
cheese. Dessert was a nice cinnamon gelati.
We had the misfortune of having a complete jerk sitting at
our table. Fortunately he didn't actually speak much to US,
but we subjected to having to listen to his conversations.
Like how there aren't many women in science because they
have a tendency to get pregnant and then they're no good any
more. He tried to start a debate on politics with the others
at the table (not me) which they weren't too keen on taking
part in, although the fact that no one else was actually
talking didn't seem to bother Mr Jerk. Frankly I don't think
he noticed.
I didn't get dragged into the conversations because I'm
apparently not good enough to talk to. He's got a Ph.D. and
is a professor you see, and I'm a lowly travel agent. With
an IQ of 135, but who really cares about that. I did poke my
nose in on him at one point when he was erroneously telling
his table mates that all the international flights go to
Calgary instead of Edmonton because Calgary is a better city
and Edmonton has nothing to offer. I had to correct him and
say that it was because Calgary is closer to the US border
and more in line with the other major Canadian cities, so of
course they get more traffic. He made some comment, I was in
the middle of responding when (I love this) he literally
turned his back on me and said "So anyway blah blah blah" to
the guy beside him.
I found a lovely website where you can get an instant
degree, so I printed off a lovely certificate for myself and
now have a Ph.D. from the University of New York.
What I'm really tempted to do is one of those completely
worthless PhDs that you actually have to pay for, but are
REAL PhDs. The ones I can find are about $200 though, and
I'm not willing to pay that much just for a joke. My fake
one was free at least. But for arrogant b@$t@rds like that
one, I'd just love to have that Ph.D. just so that I'd
actually be taken seriously.
I saw SO MUCH of this kind of [censored] when I worked at a
university. I was there for more 10 years working in various
capacities, and while most of the profs are great and are
cognizant that people with PhDs are still worthwhile and
smart people who have value and intelligence there are
unfortunately also a fair number who are so arrogant that
they actually believe that if you don't have those three
little letters you really aren't worth speaking to.
During his little lecture to the table on politics and how
medical care in Canada was terrible and it's so much better
in the US and how we ought to adopt key aspects of their
system - just pick it apart and choose what we want and
disregard the rest, I really really wanted him to shut up. I
was so tempted to tell him that picking something about like
that is like picking apart a horse - you can do it, but
sometimes it's hard to tell what end of the horse you'll end
up looking like. Except I didn't think he'd get the
inference.
Now I don't know if it was the acrimony of the company or
something to do with the food, but later that night I
discovered that something definitely was not agreeing with
me. Df ate the same thing at dinner, so who knows what it
was. The next day I still wasn't feeling right. We had a
family Mother's Day dinner planned, so it was the third
dinner in a row away from home.
Today, it snowed! And it's still snowing! Expected to end
sometime tomorrow night. What fun! (gag)
I'm off to see DF on Thursday for just under a week, which
means eating out on the weekend. Assuming we have flights
going by then (the airport is down to 1 runway due to the
snow). I think I'm going to have to drink several gallons of
water each day, just to a) make sure I'm drinking enough and
b) leave less room for restaurant meals!
Speaking of water, I think I'll have a gallon or so now.
