Hi guys, first of all please let me apologise for asking a question you guys probably get a hell of a lot. I have been looking around for a while now and regardless of how many websites or stores I visit I am no closer to knowing exactly what I'm after. So basically I thought I would see if I could get some impartial advice from you guys. I have managed to narrow my choices down to 4 bikes with seemingly similar specs & prices (in Australia anyway) which are:
I was wondering if anybody in here could offer any info or advice on any of these bikes, does anything stand out above the rest? As a newcomer I could look at these 4 all day and not be able to pick a winner on anything other than aesthetics! Anyway, any advice you guys could offer me would be greatly appreciated!

Which color do you like best...seriously. Also, if they come from different shops pick the one you like best. BTW, no inpartial advice on AM-B. E.g I don't like GT or Jamis (just don't, so there!). The SpecialEd Hardrock SS I looked at at my LBS is a brick, so I'd say pick the Giant. But what do I know. Pick the best color.

Yeah, mtbr is full of "serious" riders. I especially enjoy the reviews of a-technical singletracks that some of those "serious" riders say "can't be ridden without body armor". Seriously lame and barely coherent wiull never help much of anyone, especially a newb who does not know better. How can one sift through the BS when they have no idea what may or may not be BS?

This is very true. You should read some of the trail reviews for South Jersey. Calling anything within 80 miles of where I live technical (with the exception of certain spots in Wissahickon) is grounds for commitment to a mental institution. Those who write a technical review for South Jersey have no business being on a bicycle.

I'll go along with Shawn. The GTs and Jamis' don't float my boat. The Hardrocks I've seen recently seem to be 'built' when they don't need to be, so I'd go for the Giant. Having said all of that, try them out, see what feels comfortable. And don't get too hung up on gimmicks and components, they can always be changed later.

Thanks very much for the advice guys, I suspected that it would pretty much come down to choosing the bike that felt and looked the best as there wasnt much between them as far as components go. So, at the end of the day I went for the Giant and I'm very happy with it! All I need to do now is reach a level of fitness that will allow me to use it successfully, it has been many, many years!
