ANOTHER cleat type? what's up with time?

Look have also got a new cleat for 2005. To be fair to Time, the cleats
for their original Equipe-type pedals (which I use) are still easy to find.

Time's off road cleats have not changed, theyre still the ATACs, but they just changed the body style. Supposibly to shed mud better. And they offer a new platform pedal for freedrider types. Newer cleats have a selectable 13 or 17 degree release.

As far as road, I've seen the newer Impact pedals on sale a lot, so I started wondering if they were coming out with a new platform, but the website still prominently features the Impact.

It's called progress.

I still use cleats from <cough> a while ago and while still servicable
and locking / releasing correctly I see absolutely no reason or benefit,
other than to the supplier, of my changing them.

Fair play to companies who keep trying to improve the brand or product
though. It's this progress that means we ride the equipment we do, and
not all still ride wooden 'bone-shakers'.

As far i know these are only for the Keo pedals.
Their regular Delta cleats are now also available
with the same Bi-Material Teflon stuff which should
get rid of the creaking sound.

I took a quick look at these, they actually look like a nice
improvement. I had a set of Impacts when they first came out. Not bad
pedals, good engagement, spring centered float, nice feel, and low
stack height. My only complaint was that they were a little tough to
clip, and you couldn't bias the cleat for a toe in position. It looks
like the new cleat has some rotational adjustment. Too bad they are
probably $200 a pop.

Excel Sports has shown the new Time RXS pedals for awhile now. And I
see an advertisement for them from Competitive Cyclist on the Cycling
News website. About $250 or so for the titanium carbon version down to
$125 for the steel composite version. And I think they have one under
$100 which does not have the various adjustments. Check Excel for
prices.

Cycling News did a brief review on them last week or so. They did not
test if the Impact cleats worked with the new RXS pedals.

My personal opinion why Time came out with a new pedal so soon after
the Impact is as follows.

The Impact was redesigned a few years ago to solve two problems. 1.
The original Equipe style was heavy. Everyone wants light weight now.
The Impact were lighter, but not by much. 2. The original Equipe used
a 4 bolt mounting pattern. So you had to have the adaptors for Carnac,
Sidi, Time shoes. Not sure if any other shoes used adaptors or not.
Most just had the 3 bolt Look drilling. So the Impact cleat had the 3
bolt pattern to work with any shoe. And I see now Carnac and Sidi have
dropped the adaptor method on their new shoes so you have to have a
cleat that uses 3 bolt Look pattern if you get new shoes.

The Impact redesign solved the 3 bolt Look pattern compatibility
problem. And this should allow you to angle the cleat some. Angling
the cleat is not possible with the 4 bolt Time pattern. But the Impact
redesign did not reduce the weight enough. So sales were probably not
great. So now we have the RXS redesign to reduce the weight even more.
And I think they look pretty good. Especially at $125. If I get a
new bike and new shoes, I'll definitely give them a try.

I'm still using the Equipe design. Started in 1992 and have never used
any other road specific pedal since. I did retire my 1992 Sport model
last year when Nashbar was selling some Competition models for about
$60. I figured I was due some new shiny pedals. The old Sport models
had worn out bearings but still worked just fine. I am on my third set
of front cleats in 13 years of use. I'm always amazed when I read
about people buying new pedals and cleats and shoes every year or two
to get the latest and greatest and lightest or fix their worn out
cleats.

Has anyone seen the RXE model in Time's new range? Excel Sport's got
em for $80.

Given that the weight and materials seem to be the same as the
more-expensive RXS model, I'm wondering what you give up by going down
to this model. My guess is bushings rather than bearings???

Anyway, interesting to see Time consistely going after lower price
points now. I think the Alium off-road pedal was a big success for
them...first time EVER that I've seen US bike co's spec a Time pedal.

Don't know about bushings or bearings. But the $80 model does not have
the various adjustments such as Q distance and/or release angle and/or
release tension and/or something else. Maybe the Time website would
have a description.

LeMond bikes in the early/mid 1990s had Time Equipe pedals. The top
rebadged OCLV Chambrey model specifically. Giant last year and year
before on their carbon bikes had Time Impact pedals standard.

Does anyone know if the cleat is back compatible with the time impact
pedals. It looks like the old impacts are a deal at several sites. If
the cleats are back compatible, and can have some toe-in, I'd be real
tempted to give them another try....if you try something and like it,
it becomes a problem ($$$) with more than one bike....

Correct but Look says they are going to move to this cleat in all their pedals
over the next 3-4 years.

The 'normal' cleat now has a white teflon insert which
doubles as a wear line
