I was standing on the porch at dusk a few weeks ago and when I
turned to go back inside, there was a coral snake slithering
between my feet and the doorway - about 5" behind my feet.

Eeek. I got a little start from that.

We're on our way to Lowe's Hardware to buy some "Snake Away," which you put
around your house. Perhaps garlic and a stake is more appropriate?

Yes, the grass is cut. ;-) I've not seen any mice in the house, so I don't
know what's going on.
We did find a hole near the baseboard in the refrigerator/storage room. The
forester said that they can get in in the space of a dime.

A totally harmless critter, keeps away mice and other vermin. Do not
fall into the trap of ignorance that is so common, snakes are "icky" and
must be driven away at all costs.

If there's nothing for it to eat in your house it will go away soon
enough. If there is, then it's doing you a favor.

There are few things as pitiful as an ignoramus who gets all panicked
and shrieky when they see a snake.

I agree. It does look similar to a black rat snake too, which are a
endangered species. They are harmless, and should be given care.

The diamond pattern is usualy not as pronounced on young black rats though,
they usualy look darker, but the camera may have brought it out.
