  1. A couple of years ago a new Coffee Shop Chain opened up in the local shopping centre and I went and
tried their coffee. It only took a couple of mouthfuls for me to realise that this coffee did not
tickle my tastebuds. I did not search any further for reasons.

I meet a friend occasionally for coffee and one day he mentioned that his favourite coffee is the
one that I don't like. So I decided I would try and work out the difference in taste between these
    two coffees.

I went back to this coffee shop chain and bought a coffee. This time I was watching the taste very
carefully. I added the non-sugar sweetener sachets one at a time and tasted after each. I found that
this coffee plateaued out in sweetness at about half the level that I liked and achieved with other
coffees. It seemed to me that the two most likely causes for this were either that the coffee itself
had some impediment to achieving full sweetness or that the artificial sweetener used in this coffee
    shop was an inferior product.

So I took my own artificial sweetener with me to the coffee shop the next day. I followed the same
procedure as the previous day and got the same result using my own artificial sweetener - the
sweetness of the coffee plateaued markedly below the level I enjoy. So it wasn't the artificial
    sweetener that was the problem.

The next day I was talking to the owner of a milk bar etc, where I buy my cafe latte, about my
experiences at this other coffee shop, and he said that their coffee is a bitter coffee. So I have
told my friend that he must be a bitter old man who doesn't like sweet coffee or sweet women.

But, a little more seriously, have any other people in this news group been to a coffee shop and
found the coffee not sweet enough for their taste because the basic coffee was a "bitter" coffee?

    Nev.

  2. The blend I drink is called "Delta Mud." There is nothing sweet about it. Some chains have both a
strong and a mild blend. Sometimes, if you like sweeter or less bitter coffee, the mild blend is a
better choice. I drink mine either with cream and sweetner, sweetner only, or black. It all depends
    upon my mood. c

  3. Must be talking about "Charbucks"

    8))

Most coffee shops have an acceptable coffee to me except Charbucks. I believe they roast their beans
too long. I usually only add 1 packet of anything, but when I go to Charbucks (tee-hee, said it
again) I know I've put up to three in. Still tastes like s#%t.

  4. People's taste vary anyway. I wouldn't worry about it. I certainly wouldn't investigate about "why
    don't I like this brand"!

I don't drink coffee, but I do have preferences in booze -- so do most people -- but I don't
go around worrying about that either. I didn't worry when my tastes changed. I just drink
    what *I* like.

And if you don't like strong coffee (of whatever type), don't hang around older Navy types. Their
coffee could walk on its own. 🙂 And you could get a few "looks" if you put anything in it. bj

I don't like sweet coffee. I only drink it black. But I also don't like strong coffee or coffee that
tastes burned to me, like Starbucks. Also don't like the coffee at Dunkin donuts because it has a
strange chemical taste to it. And I don't like coffee served in Styrofoam cups. For some reason,
that gives it an odd taste. I must just be really picky!

  6. Just to give a little bit more information.

The coffee shop chain I checked out was Gloria So & So's.

The owner of the milkbar/etc where I buy my cafe lattee told me not only that the coffee I didn't
like was bitter, but that it was cheap. He also told me that "Charbucks" coffee was just the same,
which probably tallies with t2_lurking's classification of it as "s#%t"

My thanks to Colleen, Julie & t2_lurking for their kind answers. So now I know I'm not just just a
cranky old diabetic so and so imagining things.
