It sounds like bored kids doing something stoopid without thinking.
That road is hardly the place you would string it to get a cyclist and
cyclists are not very common around there - you'd be far more likely to
catch a car instead. To get a cyclist you'd be much better on the NCN2
route which passes a couple of hundred yards away on much quieter (but
still pretty much cyclist free) roads.

not murder.

Wounding with intent to cause injury would probably be the correct
charge in this case, and is a very serious matter.

I'm not sure that such a charge exists does it? In any event this was
discussed at length a couple of weeks back, so I suggest you read that
thread if you're sufficiently interested. The conclusion of most was
that if the intent was to cause injury (which it must have been) and
death resulted then it would class as murder, whereas manslaughter
would only be appropriate if the death was a result of something not
obviously intended to cause injury.

The place is less than a mile from my partner's father's home. Though
there are many motorists, there are more cyclists about there than here.

Your sympathy is appreciated. I was an active cyclist until my MS made
this impossible. Now I'm an active non-cyclist; I sit on committees, sit
around my local CTC haunts (sat about local CTC 150km Audax yesterday,
took photos, drank tea and ate CAKE.)

It happened in Swindon last year and scarred a woman for life. They did
actually catch the perps, but I don't know what happened to them.
