  1. Hello All:

I request all fellow members of this group for advice.

My wife has been asked by our PCP to take antidepressents. I
want to know how this can affect our lives ? Will she be
addicted to it ? I see FDA has given warnings on suicidal
tendencies after taking these drugs, what is the
    common/expert opinion ?

I love my wife more then anything else in this world, i am
very much worried about her ?

    What options do i have.....

    thanx Dinu

Did your PCP tell you what her diagnosis was?? What are her
    symptoms??

Impossible to answer. If your wife is suffering from a
severe depression and responds to the anti-depressant then
it may change your life for the better. It may actually save
    your wife's life.

I don't believe so at least not in the classical sense of
the word. However there are some anti-depressants that must
be tapered quite slowly when you are coming off of it or
else you may experience adverse effects. You need to talk
    to your PCP about this.

Actually anyone who is suffering from a depression needs to
be monitored for suicidal ideas and behavior. Whether anti-
depressants increase the risk for suicide is far from clear.
It is difficult to prove cause and effect. Those who do
become suicidal on anti-depressants may just be not
responding to the medication and the illness is getting
worse. When depression gets worse, suicidal ideas become
    more common.

She is lucky to have someone who loves and cares about her.
Show her this love and it will certainly help with her
depression if that is what she has. As often as you can,
tell her that you love her and acknowledge whatever feelings
    that she is experiencing.

If in doubt get a second opinion about the need for anti-
depressants. I wonder about a PCP prescribing instead of a
psychiatrist. It is important that she be monitored closely
especially if her depression is severe.

    Good luck.

If your wife isn't suicidal now, I know of no evidence that
the antidepressants will make her that way.

It she supposed to take them forever or just for a while?
In some cases, taking them for a year or two can kickstart
the brain's own mechanisms. But the latest generation,
based on the experiences of people I know, can have almost
no side effects. Still, this is a question for the PCP. You
can also do your own research, but beware the quality of
    the info you get.

The PDR is apt to give you too negative a view, by the way.

there's alot of disagreement. It'd be a good idea to
research about the medication before deciding to take it.

It'd probably be a good idea to personally research possible
causes of her depression, By this I mean some people can
have their depression treated by taking supplements like
omega 3, magnesium, etc. There can be more to depression
than just psychology. The very purpose of antidepressants is
to alter neurochemistry. There can be reasons why this
neurochemistry is disturbed in the first place.

No. They are not addictive like opiates and Valium (an anti-
    anxiety drug).

Untreated depression is far riskier to her life.

Jan, as usual, does not understand what she posts....

"Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft-they're household words. But in
spite of their success, the Big Three antidepressants have
their limits. A major drawback is that they take three to
four weeks to bring a depressed patient's mood back into
balance. In the interim, patients may stop taking the drugs,
assuming that they don't work; victims of severe depression
continue to be at risk for suicide."

Thus, this site clearly points out that the medications can
prevent suicide, and the dangerous problem is that the long
period before they are effective is what is the problem.

    miami.com82

"The FDA made its recommendations while studies are being
conducted to determine what role, if any, antidepressants
may play in provoking suicidal behavior."

Which clearly supports David's statement that there is no
    evidence that anti-depressant cause suicide.

    Quoted message said:

    tinyurl.com2fmh6

Another news article about the same story..but...

"A Health Canada spokesperson said the warnings - with a
reference to the suicide risk - have been on the product
monograph for antidepressants for some time. Paige Raymond
Kovach could not say how long the warning had been present
in Canada, but said the information was available to doctors
    and pharmacists."

so it is not really news, as jan has been told.

No. It is a recognition that the PDR reports all reported
side effects, even if there is no proof of causality.
